Viceroy 16 Posted October 15 Good news for The King and Queen before they land Down Under with a poll showing a slump in republican support. I've said it for years - I fully expect there to be a King William V of Australia and King George VII of Australia in my lifetime.

I've said it for years - I fully expect there to be a King William V of Australia and King George VII of Australia in my lifetime. Will is more popular among Australians and New Zealanders then his father. I don't expect either, or especially Canada, to drop them on our team within my lifetime or hell, the next 100 to 150 years. Australia relatively recently removed their Republican minister in cabinet, and the current New Zealand PM has noted there's a little chance NZ it is going that way either, both claiming more pressing matters or political concerns... As for canada, I'm sure Manitoba wouldn veto any attempt at change. After all, essentially until I was born they still required schools to have their students sing God Save The Queen, and that was in the '90s...
Toast 16,232 Posted October 15 As I like to remind anti-monarchists: consider what the alternative might be.
Sod's Law 471 Posted October 15 Probably because nothing will meaningfully change in most peoples' lives whether there's a monarch or not. Removing the king is a symbolic move rather than a practical one and will involve a lot of constitutional wrangling on top of that which distracts from other issues that matter more. I'm not a diehard monarchist in any sense but there are just other battles I would rather be fighting than swapping out a powerless figurehead head of state.

Octopus of Odstock 2,215 Posted October 26 Full and normal schedule for 2025 according to the BBC for overseas trips. To commit to that, with cancer treatment, as well seems largely positive prognosis for the King

But it does seem to be going far better than some folks on here have suggested, which I'm happy about. Now only if he'd visit Canada...
Ulitzer95 12,844 Posted December 6 Today the King stripped 6 people of their honours. Formal announcement and full list available here. Includes: Tory peer Lord Rami Ranger (wiki), stripped of his CBE for bullying journalists and making inappropriate comments about the Pakistani community Tech businessman Lawrence Jones (wiki), stripped of his MBE after being convicted of rape (currently in prison) Hong Kong academic Lam Shiu-kum, stripped of his OBE after being jailed for misconduct in office Accountant and Hindu Council UK boss Anil Bhanot, stripped of his OBE for comments deemed to be Islamophobic Duke of Edinburgh regional director Robert Johnston, stripped of his MBE – unclear why Church leader and homeless charity boss Michael Andrea, stripped of his BEM – unclear why Prior to 2023, it was exceptionally rare to be stripped of an honour but it seems to be becoming common place now. I think it's a welcome move when it comes to criminal convictions. I'm not convinced it should be done when people make stupid comments though. Everyone's done that at some point.

gcreptile 11,067 Posted December 9 Prince William talked to Donald Trump about Charles' cancer. https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1986548/prince-william-king-charles-health-update In the immortal words of Donald Trump: "And I asked him about his father and his father is fighting very hard, and he loves his father and he loves his wife, so it was sad." Still, apparently William makes a difference between Kate who is doing well, and Charles who is "fighting very hard". I mean.... Charles' cancer is terminal isn't it?

Toast 16,232 Posted December 9 I think William was referring to the King's determination not to let his cancer treatments stop him from getting out and about. I suspect his doctors want him to take things easier.
Youth in Asia 1,088 Posted December 10 If he only has a year or two left he might as well do all the king stuff with royal tours etc. rather than just sitting at home waiting for death. After all that was what he was waiting all these long decades for.
