73 Terunofuji Haruo (born 1991) Became Yokozuna in 2021

Terunofuji Haruo has been made a Yokozuna, meaning that there are 16 living Yokozuna.

I'm pretty sure the number will decrease soon though, as there are three Yokozuna (numbers 62, 64 and 66) who were over 200kg during their careers (over 440lb) who are now in their fifties and have all had a ton of health problems.

Dead, wikipedia saying he was murdered but I doubt that. Edit: Yeah, mention of that removed.

He, along with Abe and Osawa were made Kodokan 10th dan on 8th of January 2006. Abe was 83, Daigo had just reached 80 and Osawa was 79. 15 years and ten months later the first out of the three is dead.

May 1970 - Hoshiiwato Yuji (born 1955)

International Judo Federation 10th dan

Yoshiro "Yosh" Uchida (born 1920)

Doing a bit of reading and researching about these...

Wakakoma Kenzo (May 1952 section) died in 2019 at 82 according to his Japanese wiki.

Kanenohana Takeo (May 1952) The Japanese wiki says that "it's said that he died (after retiring and running a restaurant), but the age at the time of death and the date of death are not known"

Kiminishiki Toshimasa (May 1953) Seems to have died in 2013 at 77. Ran a chankonabe (soup eaten by sumo wrestlers) restaurant that closed in 2008.

Health notes:

Haguroyama Sojo (January 1950) Adopted another sumo wrestler in the 1990s. Soon 88 years old.

Wakamiyama Kōhei (November 1957) How is he still alive (IF he hasn't died off-radar) He was 176kg/388lb and one of the heaviest sumo wrestlers of the 1960s, already struggled from diabetes and knee problems during his sumo career, retired 1969 and also had a restaurant.

Genichiro Tenryu (December 1963) Still living at 71 despite becoming a show wrestler trained by Terry Funk after retiring from being a sumo wrestler.

Yokozuna health notes:

Kitanofuji Katsuaki: The 52nd Yokozuna had a heart surgery in 2017. Commentator nowadays, approaching 80.

Wakanohana Kanji II: In poor health for almost a decade.

Akebono Taro: Picked him in my six people six months pool, failed to lose weight when he went to MMA, kickboxing and professional wrestling after his sumo career after which in 2017 he went to hospital with infection, hospitalised in 2018 with acute heart failure and spent a month in induced coma, now wheelchair bound and possibly a dementia sufferer.

Correction: He wasn't hospitalised again in 2018. He was in hospital and suffered a serious heart attack that made him so frail he could barely move at first. Still seriously frail, last time in public seems to have been in 2019: seems to live in a hospital?

Also, Yosh Uchida is planning on starting to coach again soon. At 101.

Sojo is at 87 also the oldest professional sumo wrestler ever.

Jackie Chan 1954– also had an uncredited cameo

Sad times. A favourite of mine growing up.

The SunDaily Mail for Bob Wall.

Could've been yet another quick hit.

There's a lesson here... octogenarian Hollywood types are always safer bets than obscure centenarian Iranian clerics.

I watched a lot of terrible B movies on You Tube during lockdown.  Low Blow was one of the few decent films I found
