If Bohemian Rhapsody and Space Oddity have been overplayed it is because they stand out from a lot of mediocre seventies music. Not only were they technically brilliant and original but they were both presented by extremely charismatic but challenging performers.

Space Oddity actually was originally released in 1969 so the fact that it charted years later really showed that song was ahead of its time

They do stand out because they're a bit different and therefore memorable in a way that's unrepresentative of the artist.  I'd put Stairway To Heaven in the same category.   I reared up on a friend once for playing STH once too often.

"Can't we just once listen to something else by Led Zeppelin?  This isn't even typical of their stuff", and I put on Black Dog.

Everyone had forgotten how good that was because all they ever hear is bloody Stairway.

Rarely hear Achilles Last Stand praised but it's my favourite Zeppelin track.

Hmm following this, fave singles by:

Queen - Breakthru, A Kind of Magic, somebody to love, I want to break free, winters tale

Zeppelin: also ramble on, immigrant song

Bowie: Ashes to Ashes, Absolute Beginners

Stones: Paint it black

Barry White: See the trouble with me

Alas, most of those got nowhere near number one but Joe Dolce did.

Mine are quite similar

Queen: Somebody To Love, A Kind Of Magic, I Want To Break Free, Under Pressure, These Are The Days Of Our Lives

Bowie:  Ashes To Ashes, Heroes, Let's Dance .... too many to mention ... I love Where Are We Now too.

Stones:  Street Fighting Man, Out Of Time,  Gimme Shelter, Far Away Eyes .... everything really

Barry White, You See The Trouble With Me - I bought that single at the time :D

My favourite Queen track is Don't Stop Me Now. Bowie track is probably Life on Mars

Neither act will have another Seventies No.1 after these tracks and will not top the charts until Under Pressure in 1980.

@Redrumours There is still a mistake: Suzi Quatro has to be at 24 points, not 26. Thanks.
