Kill or Save: UK No. 1-hits of the 70s

Recommended Posts

14 David Bowie – Space Oddity  -4

12 Donna Summer – I Feel Love  +4

0 Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights  -2

Sorry, Kate lovers. Wuthering Heights was a tour de force, but I don't feel it was influential in the way that the Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder collaboration proved to be.

Same can be said of Space Oddity, another one-off.

What toast said. Looks like we're going to lose to a novelty record ffs - that's just wrong after all this.

I love Bowie, but no.

I thought we were better than this.

David Bowie was an icon and a genius, and Space Oddity doesn’t show that off enough IMO. It is a novelty more than a masterpiece; an interesting concept more than an enjoyable listen.

Both Heart of Glass and I Feel Love are definitive songs, true icons of new wave and disco. HoG, as a couple of others have said, isn’t even my favourite Blondie song, but fuck me it’s good and its influence is laced throughout the subsequent 45 years of music. On a personal level it takes it, but Donna Summer is definitely a worthy winner.

Quality will out in the end.

And despite my misgivings, it did.

Loads of great tracks in the last part, so hard to call, but that's really the right decision in my view. :)

After 80 days of killing and saving, discussing and arguing, laughing and crying, loving and hating - we found our winner, and what a winning song that is: It's the iconic and influencial space disco tune I FEEL LOVE of the divine Donna Summer! Thanks for that! I really appreciate this winning song!

I'm sorry that I don't have the time to present you an elaborated summary of our journey and every Top 25 song, but here is a listing at least:

The Grand Final:

01. Donna Summer – I feel love

02. David Bowie – Space Oddity

03. Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights

04. Blondie – Heart of glass

05. ABBA – The name of the game

06. Gary Numan – Cars

07. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

08. T.Rex – Get it on

09. ABBA – Knowing me, knowing you

10. Suzi Quatro – Devil Gate Drive

11. The Sweet – Blockbuster

12. Baccara – Yes Sir, I can boogie

13. Alice Cooper – School´s out

So, now shut your eyes, pump up the volume, dance around and let's start 2023 with MUCH LOVE!

Thank you all for beeing part of this little game and musical journey! It was fucking fun!!!  Thank you!

Had a bad feeling that Blondie would be gonners by the time I got up today but happy that HoG was rated 4th best in a very strong list. Well done to Donna Summer a worthy winner.

Thank you for running this. It was so much fun. Naturally I was routing for Kate Bush but the last four would all have been worthy winners

What can I say we have excellent taste

Not the result I was looking for, but the people have spoken (and be honest, its not the first time the people have been wrong). Bring on the 80s!
