I wasn't a big X Factor watcher, caught a couple of series in the late noughties (Alexandra Burke era). Like you, I lost the will when Cowell spent weeks pillorying Jedward then when they were in the bottom two, with the casting vote, he sent home a young girl called Lucy Jones instead, causing pages of tabloid "controversy". If it came from your heart, then there was some ineffable element X that made the way you technically sounded secondary. There are many good, even great voices out there tied to people who will never sound convincing or exciting. They are all over TV talent shows and in lounges in Holiday Inns all across America. They can carry a tune, sound tonally impeccable, they can hit all the high notes, but they cannot capture the full emotional content of a song." I didn't watch the X-Factor I saw one episode at my Brother-in-Law's once and I was shocked by the hyperbole. With all the talent shows all you will find is a good safe singer.. You cannot imagine discovering a Kate Bush, David Bowie or Neil Tennant that way. IIRC, weren't they re-releasing all his number 1 hits 50 years after they first reached #1? After the success of the JXL "Little Less Conversation" collaboration.
