Kill or Save: UK No.2 Hits of the 90s

We're getting there with this list. N-Trance are turning on the Christmas lights one town across from us this year. People of a certain age seem filled with nostalgia. I am not of that age.

Neither am I and I don't even remember that song, but I liked it when I listened to it.

Nearly everything I liked has been voted out now.

I’m also staggered that N-Trance has been binned. It’s absolutely class! You cannot tell me that Bon fucking Jovi is a more rousing and enjoyable listen.

Are people just voting things down because they’re not in the top half of the list? That’s not the way to go. Makes me wonder if the result would be different if the kills and assists weren’t counted?

Bon Jovi is a decent power ballad.  It's an entirely different genre so there's no comparison.

I do think some people are voting songs down because they are near the bottom, and I will do this but only if I've listened to them and not liked them.  I don't do it indiscriminately.

Well look, this isn’t (completely) a dictatorship; what do people think about trying this without the score counts? I feel as if the kill counts turn the game more into a maths exercise than an expression of opinion. Let me know what you think.

I think there's only one player who cares about kill counts ;)

Oh I don’t know. I’ll have a think about either killing the scoreboards or adjusting the rules. Maybe when I’m not pissed off at two brilliant songs in a row having been given the boot.

The kills/assists makes very little difference to how I play the game. If something's "killable" and its not reasonably likely to make my final 5 of what's left, then I'm happy to get rid. If it is, then I try and save it, even if it's in the killable zone. I don't think it's a simple as people looking to get rid of a song, I've tried to set that in motion before and failed - I think what happens is someone downvotes something, the next person thinks "yeah, I'm not fussed about that either" and adds their -6 to it and that happens a few times in a row and it gets removed. If a song has support, it wouldn't go - and yes, it can be that the song's in the wrong place at the wrong time of day, but that's part of the game. As proved last night, I would not have got rid of the Alex Party song just yet, I like that one.

I don't mind what's left on the whole, I might border on sacrilegious and suggest Mis-Shapes is the better Pulp song...

I'm sure the scores would be completely different if people actually genuinely voted for the songs they liked or disliked and not just to make a name for themselves by only voting for the song with 6 or less points.  If I don't like a song, down it goes. It's just a bonus if it has a score of 6 or less at the time of the vote.

It seems to affect some and not others. Food for thought…

Completely agree re: Pulp. I’d go as far as to say Common People ain’t all that.

This "kill" and "assist" thing is the main reason I stopped participating. In my opinion, certain people are voting with the intention of getting on the scoreboard at the end of the game, rather than voting on what they actually think of the song.

Agree about Pulp, Common People is not their best song, and their version is not the best version.

I agree. I get the idea of moving the game on, but this is an opinion poll. There might be some tactics to protect or eject a song one feels strongly about but really that’s the only time one might change their vote.

I’m scrapping the scoreboard.
