I'll probably do the February roundup in early March, as I typically do. Might be famous last words given how many February hits there have been already, but work has resumed a less-backbreaking state and the twin DDP/HPDP beasts are far more under control.

Ah right.  It's so rare that I get hits on the HDP that the excitement got to me.

I'm also cutting down on nuns in this pool.

And here we go

Jonnie Irwin went from the third-most popular pick last year to the second-most popular this year, despite being on three fewer teams. After a long wait 23 of you finally get to enjoy A Place in the Sun:

drol 45 points.

Charles De Gaulle and Torva Messor 40.

DeathBecomesThem, Funeralopolis, maryportfuncity, and The Unknown Man 35.

Book, Etushispushingupdaisies, Perhaps, Thatcher, wannamaker 25.

Sean 20.

John Key and The Old Crem 15.

BuffaloPhil 10.

and diego, ladyfiona, and Toast 25 sub points.

DevonDeathTrip's nun-slim outlook is paying off so far, with a second hit in the shape of reggae elder statesman Aston Barrett. The Marley man wails out 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus).

Dries Van Agt led the Netherlands for five years, and proved an unexpectedly lucrative HPDP pick thanks to his decision to undergo euthanasia. The lucky pickers are CalebH with 63 points (45 base + 18 bonus) and arghton 49 (35 base + 14 bonus), plus 25 sub points for ThereWillBeDeaths7.

Maybe Van Agt put an end to it all so he didn't have to suffer Toby Keith on the airwaves any more. Perhaps the man who best epitomized the God-bothery jingoist decay of country music, the Dubya cheerleader found a Dead Duo Cup in the HPDP with theoldlady patriotically proclaiming 45 points and DeathByArsenic 10.

The day after Van Agt and Keith saw two hits in a day once more. Renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa had directed his baton to charge two teams through a challenging symphony, with CaptainChorizo navigating upward by 35 points and JoeMoneypenny 5.

Not Marcus Welby, nor the gerontology stuffed shirt, Robert M. Young was a pioneer in independent filmmaking known for his frequent usage of Edward James Olmos. Yet another victim of the curse of Sulu, Torva Messor captures 25 sub points.

A few days later was another with two cadavers to its name. Robert Badinter was behind the abolition of the death penalty in France, but we all will face the Grim Reaper's guillotine one day. MariNisia gets 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus).

Can frontman Damo Suzuki was long ailing with colon cancer, and now that he's losing, he's losing, he's losing, he's losing his pulse, proved to be the vitamin justonecornetto needed with a value of 42 points (30 base + 12 bonus).

Alexis Buchman. I don't like this pick at all. Apparently softball is technically a different sport from baseball, but FFS I'm just going to consider her a baseball player since I don't really know or care what the difference is. So -7 points for Banana (35 base - 42 bonus).

Irene Camber was a leading fencer who jousted to Olympic gold in the 50s in the foil competition, well before hitting 80s stardom with "Flashdance... What a Feeling" and "Fame". She's worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus) for MariNisia.

Half of the Hairy Bikers hirsute foodie duo, the death of Dave Myers sees two teams rev up their motorcycles for a cuisine tour. Toast dines on 30 points, and DevonDeathTrip 25.

Wrestler Paul Vachon proved undeniably hardy, surviving multiple cancer bouts and the unnatural deaths of his sister and daughter. CaptainChorizo didn't butcher his HPDP prospects with a high placement delivering 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus).

Lastly, the first hit of March, and we are finally up to date. Iris Apfel, the rimmed-glasses fashionista who hobnobbed with high Hollywood and US presidents, kept chic until the very end. One last burst of style comes with her HPDP points, fancying up BuffaloPhil by 30 points and Pedro67 20.

And here be the next scoreboard. The narrative is roughly the same as last scoreboard - Banana holds a slender lead over Perhaps, while both have decent breathing room from the chasing pack. Still early days though...

Kurt Hamrin, Swedish football great and last survivor of the 1958 World Cup final, died way back in early February but his HPDP status escaped me. Famous6Eva is duly off the mark with 42 points (30 base + 12 bonus).

Now into March. Canadian jazz pioneer Eleanor Collins swan songs a classy duet. The two who head north on the scoreboard are GuyFromFuture by 45 points and Torva Messor by 35 points.

Despite his popularity in the DDP, RTE journalist Charlie Bird was surprisingly a unique hereabouts. A Bird in the hand is worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus) for msc.

Charlie's son Philippe de Gaulle was another unique, this time for Imelda with 21 points (15 base + 6 bonus).

Astronaut Thomas P. Stafford was in declining health in recent months and so was always likely to rocket onto a HPDP team or two. MariNisia gets 49 points closer to the stars (35 base + 14 bonus), while Perhaps launches his first sub with 25 points.

Roger Ebert once stated "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad." Does that rule also apply to deadpool teams? Thatcher says yes, consigning Walsh to a supporting role on the subs bench which the craggy thesp did with typical aplomb, delivering 50 points and marking the first team where both subs have died.

The world's oldest man, that eternal deadpooling staple food, delivers once again. Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez was a unique for BuffaloPhil worth 42 points (30 base + 12 bonus).

Have to admit, when I saw the news Lynne Reid Banks died, I thought for a minute "wasn't she the one who died two years ago?". My mind had fused her and Margaret Stuart Barry into one, children's authors of similar ages who were frequently picked by YorkshireBanker. While Barry died off radar, there no such worries for Banks, and Banker can take his banking on Banks to the bank with a haul of 70 points (50 base + 20 bonus).

The March scoreboard sees a swap in leads, with Thomas Stafford allowing Perhaps to surpass Banana.

I find myself holding up the tower of names on my zero points.

I should warn you, my upper body strength isn't good. That tower could come tumbling down at any time!

(I feel it likely though that I may be stuck there for some considerable time to come!).

Should update tomorrow. Seems Jaime de Arminan, Josip Manolic (who got a WaPo shout to skate by here in face of his dearth of UK press), and Frank Field were the only hits since last time?

You know, it's late, but only four names, I'll do it now.

Three of the four were not DDP hits. Two were just not picked, the other currently lacks a DDP-friendly obit. First up is Jaime de Armiñán, a Spanish director Oscar-nommed for Mi querida señorita (My Dear Senorita) and El nido (The Nest). He also wrote Nuestro fantasma (Our Ghost), y ahora es el fantasma del HPDP. WEP chalks ups 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus).

Well before Susan Collins perfected the usage of "concerned" to seem far more moderate than you actually are, Beverly LaHaye founded the evangelist anti-feminist group Concerned Women for America. She learned how to be a homemaker because she felt it would teach her to be more submissive, and Reagan said she changed the face of America, so yeah. As far as the HPDP is concerned, she's a unique pick for arghton worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus).

Josip Manolic served only a year as Prime Minister of Croatia, but he did manage to be in the post when the country declared independence from a quickly-dissolving Yugoslavia. Seen as a conciliatory figure in his later years, he also saw scrutiny for oppression under his watch during the Tito years. Croatian social media accorded him a Zsa Zsa stature he worked hard to earn: His first wife died in a house fire, his second was 35 years his junior but still predeceased him, he survived COVID aged 101, and he received last rites at the end of 2023 yet was able to muster up another season's worth of breathing. He could only run on low fuel for so long, so was a natural cult pick here: wannamaker gains 40 points, Book and chilean way 35, and John Key 15.

Political heavyweight Frank Field needs little introduction hereabouts, with his surprise endurance in the face of terminal cancer frustrating deadpoolers like his political quirks frustrated Labour mainstreamers. He made a very strong debut in 2022 at 26 pickers before collapsing to 9 in 2023. He enjoyed a decent rebound to 16 teams this time:

drol fields 45 points.

chilean way, Hell, John Key, and Pedro67 35.

maryportfuncity and The Unknown Man 30.

Captain Hemlock, Thatcher, and The Old Crem 25.

ladyfiona 15.

diego and Torva Messor punch in their second sub hit for 50 points.

and An Fear Beag, BuffaloPhil and Charles de Gaulle their first for 25 points.

New scoreboard ahead. The heavyweight Field hit means a new leader, as Torva Messor climbs to first on the back of clearing her subs bench:

She was a solo hit for @arghton:

Perhaps a good omen for the people who picked Bobby Vinton or Bruce Willis :D

Well, this passed me by, Toby Keith really will be needing retroactive bonus points in a different category. He did Hollywood Squares.

That shall be remedied come early June.

Hoping to crank out the update tomorrow, I think it's:

Cesar Luis Menotti

Frank Ifield

Janis Paige

Rob Burrow

William Russell

Plus awarding the Toby Keith Squares points.

Anastasia Z thingy only got Russian press from what I see, and no Russian QOs here. So LotL as stands. Nowt for Mollie Lentaigne either, though wouldn't call a broadsheet shout impossible.

May and early June update here. The timespan since my last update was replete with carkers who felt like HPDP potentials (Roger Corman, Alice Munro, Super Gran, Dabney Coleman, Jeannette Charles) but were nowhere to be found. But a few still fell in the HPDP radar.

First up, belated arrival of the Toby Keith Squares points. theoldlady's points total is updated to 72, and DeathByArsenic's 16.

Now for fresh cadavers.

Footballer and manager César Luis Menotti will forever be known for taking Argentina to Cup glory in 1978, and El Flaco wasn't flaky in the HPDP either. BabyBlue hails César from the subs bench, worth 25 points.

Yodeler Frank Ifield took the UK charts by storm in a brief fever dream in the early 60s. Beatlemania threw his hitmaking career to the wayward wind, but it was still worth remembering him if only because he did Celebrity Squares and pantomime. And YoungWillz did exactly that for his Squares theme team, with an Alpine-sized points haul of 119 points (35 base + 84 bonus). Maybe not the pivotal Cup hit he was hotly tipped to be, but could well be a key player to the HPDP race.

The heavy lifting this update came courtesy of rugby great Rob Burrow, tackled by 15 teams this edition:

Pedro67 and Torva Messor gain 35 points.

maryportfuncity and msc 30.

Hell, Perhaps, and The Old Crem 25.

CaptainChorizo, Funeralopolis, and The Unknown Man 20.

Toast 15.

DeathBecomesThem 10.

An Fear Beag and ladyfiona 50 sub points.

wannamaker 25 sub points.

On the same day, actress Janis Paige completed the Pajama Game and dressed herself for permanent rest. A scene stealer in many of the projects she graced, so too was she a major selling point for Charles de Gaulle as a unique Squares participant. He turns the Paige to 88 points (40 base + 48 bonus).

I'm a little surprised Sir Ian himself, William Russell, didn't qualify for any bonuses as far as I can see. Perhaps a cue for one of his pickers to hop in the TARDIS for the most important time travel mission of all - getting William Russell onto a vintage Celebrity Squares episode. Until then, five teams Russell up the regular points: Hell gains 25, John Key and Sean 20, Prophet 15, and Bibliogryphon 25 sub points.

And here comes the new scoreboard. The composition of the podium remains unchanged from last time, though gold Torva Messor and silver Perhaps both gained from Burrow while bronze Banana attained no new hits. Paige and Ifield show how a motherlode of points can change a team's fortunes - Charles De Gaulle jumps from mid-table obscurity to the top five via the former, and Willz nothing to top fifteen via the latter.

Incidentally, if I gave Ifield the Crimes Against Humanity points for his music, Willz would have 287 points and the lead, but with great power comes great responsibility. Do not park outside my apartment and blare Ifield from your loudspeakers to try to change my mind.
