JR976evil 906 Posted April 13, 2013 I don't understand why she's getting a fancy funeral. Is it because of the Falklands war? Very bad decision in my opinion. They can split hairs all they like, but the perception is that it's a state funeral. It is in all but name

Phantom 2,533 Posted April 13, 2013 Says it all really. But she isn't getting a State Funeral, though... Interesting graphic nevertheless. It should read "reintroduced the poll tax". They first tried to imposed it in 1377 and then again in 1641, each time resulted in widespread riots.
Ulitzer95 12,586 Posted April 14, 2013 Just a tad biased. Britain was coming out of a WORLD WAR when Attlee was in power, so there's a situational difference. Naturally, there'd be more things to rebuild, and create.
Bibliogryphon 9,572 Posted April 15, 2013 Just a tad biased. Britain was coming out of a WORLD WAR when Attlee was in power, so there's a situational difference. Naturally, there'd be more things to rebuild, and create. But it is the way he did it, he was given a mandate which he used to its full to rebuild Britain as a fairer society. The current Government has a mandate to reduce the deficit but they focus on measures that will disproportionally impact on the most vulnerable in society.

Bibliogryphon 9,572 Posted April 15, 2013 I am no lover of musicals but all morning I have been singing to myself snatches of "Oh What a Circus" from Evita - some of Tim Rice's lyrics seem so apt to describe Wednesday. "Demand to be buried like Eva Peron, its quite a sunset and good for the country in a roundabout way we've made the front pages of all the world's papers today" or "Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right" or "What kind of Goddess has lived amongst us? How will we ever get by without her?"
Body Snatcher 44 107 Posted April 15, 2013 Bloody strange when I heard the news...it was announced during tonight's episode of Q&A which featured a panel of assorted feminists, who had been talking about women in positions of power and Thatcher's name had only just been mentioned... From one Snatcher to another Snatcher - Goodbye Mrs. Thatcher. I watched Q&A again this week, anticipating another significant announcement during the show - there was none. Phantom 2,533 Posted April 15, 2013 Not sure how the Margaret Thatcher Memorial Museum and Library will go down with many people Well they do have a Holocaust museum The holocaust museum is to commemorate and pay tribute to the lives lost. If they really wanted to do something as a memorial then it should be a job center.

themaninblack 2,112 Posted April 15, 2013 This takes the piss somewhat The chimes of Big Ben will be silenced for the duration of Baroness Thatcher's funeral, House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has announced. The penny dropped this afternoon. "Not lying in State" be damned, this is a state funeral. Big Ben silenced, Queen turns up, gun carriage and soldiers in attendance and carrying the coffin, probably a gun salute too. Now if the establishment had been honest about this and said, yes this is a state funeral now what the fuck are you going to do about it, I would understand as we all half expected this to happen anyway. This though is clearly an attempt to sneak one through the back door and was a part of the plan all along, to somehow assuage some of those who were not that well discerned towards the Baroness and suggest somehow that this isn't a state funeral. It is, so stop pissing about. I smell the whiff of Cameron about this...

If they really wanted to do something as a memorial then it should be a job center. They already have something memorial, the Thatcher Gates at 10 Downing Street, erected in 1990 to stop irate poll tax non-payers from strangling her and that's the God's honest truth.
