Toby Kimball, a humble giant on the basketball court, and one of the first players from UConn to forge a significant NBA career, has died.  He was 74.

He had been battling inflammatory lung disease. 

Toby Kimball played for UConn from 1962-65, averaging 18.4 points and 17.4 rebounds per game. In 1964-65, he led the nation with 20.6 rebounds per game, and the Huskies were 23-2 — losing two regular season games that Kimball missed. He had 34 rebounds in one game against New Hampshire.  

After UConn, Kimball, 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, from Sudbury, Mass., was chosen by the Celtics in the third round of the 1965 NBA draft. He played a season in Italy, then played in the NBA for the Celtics, Rockets, Bucks, Kings, 76ers and Jazz in a career that lasted until 1975. He averaged 6.1 points and 6.8 rebounds during his NBA career. In his best season, he averaged 11.1 points and 11.7 rebounds for San Diego in 1967-68.

Darrall Imhoff, the all-American center who led the University of California to the 1959 N.C.A.A. tournament basketball championship and to the runner-up spot the next season, played on a gold-medal-winning United States Olympic team and then had a long career in the NBA, died on Friday in Bend, Ore. He was 78.  Cause was a heart attack.|

Rollie Massimino, the coach who guided Villanova to one of college basketball’s most improbable national titles, died Wednesday at the age of 82.

Massimino had been battling lung cancer and reportedly had recently entered a hospice care facility near his Florida home.

Even though Massimino won more than 800 games in 48 years as a college head coach, he’ll always be best known for one momentous victory in particular. Massimino’s 1985 Villanova team capped off an unfathomable run from No. 8 seeds to national champions by upsetting Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown in the title game.

Jim McDaniels, who played for the Carolina Cougars (1971-1972), Seattle SuperSonics (1972-1974), Los Angeles Lakers (1975-1976), Kentucky Colonels (1976) and the Buffalo Braves (1977-1978), has died aged 69. He also briefly played for Italian team Udinese (1974-1975).

Justin Reed, who starred for the Ole Miss basketball team from 2000-04 and went to play three seasons in the NBA with the Celtics and Timberwolves, died early Friday morning after a battle with angiosarcoma, a form of spinal cancer.

The Golden State Warriors are having 'Al Attles Night' as a tribute to one of their great old players/coaches, but Attles won't be attending, as he's in hospital instead.  He's 80.  One to keep an eye on.

 

And an easy obit, no worries there:  "He became known as “The Destroyer” during his 11-year NBA career with the Warriors where he averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while ranking fifth on the Warriors’ all-time games played listed (711). During his 13-year coaching career with the Warriors, Attles led Golden State to its first NBA title in 1975 as well as six playoff appearances.

Attles is also one of six Warriors players to have his jersey retired (No. 16) along with Rick Barry (24), Wilt Chamberlain (13), Tom Meschery (14), Chris Mullin (17) and Nate Thurmond (42)."

Good catch, President Mugabe.  Actaully ALL college sports are fringe imho, as I don't bother much with college football, like many good Americans, both white and black, will be doing today.  As for college basketball, I have almost no interest, maybe watch a couple tournament games.

Kenneth Head, the older brother of former Tennessee Lady Vols coaching legend Pat Summitt, died Monday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Head, 67, died at his home in Chapmansboro, Tenn. He had been a farmer who raised cattle and grew tobacco.

Redshirt freshman guard Paulina Castro set on an unexpected journey in December of 2016 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer that attacks the immune system.

News of this caliber is not easy for anyone to receive, but Castro’s positive mentality, along with encouragement from her family, teammates and coaches, made her journey inspirational to everyone who knows her story.
Blah blah blah....story goes on to talk about her playing women's basketball at a small Iowa university.  Is it interesting to anyone else Lauren Hill's name isn't mentioned?  How quickly she was forgotten.  In fact, I couldn't think of her name lol had to google it just now.

Julius 'Dr J' Erving falls ill while at a Philidephia 76ers game, rushed to hospital.  The 67-year-old is currently undergoing observation at the hospital and expected to be released.

Apparently he was jealous for not being 'one to watch' on DP 2018, so is making sure he gets on all your 2019 possibilities homework.

Former Providence College basketball player Ernie "Pop" Lewis, one of the stars on the Friars team that made a run to the Final Four in 1987, died Wednesday at his home in Philadelphia, family members said.   Lewis was co-captain of the 1987 team, which was coached by Rick Pitino. Lewis, Billy Donovan and Delray Brooks led Providence's magical run that season. The Friars finished 25-9, losing to Syracuse in the national semifinal.   That season was the first that allowed the 3-point shot in college basketball, and the Friars took advantage. The 6-foot-4 Lewis put up 220 shots from behind the arc that season and hit 42 percent of them.
