Former Minnesota Timberwolves center Sean Rooks has died at the age of 46.

Rooks, who played two seasons for the Timberwolves from 1994-96, collapsed suddenly and died in a Philadelphia restaurant on Tuesday. In addition to the Wolves, Rooks also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Hornets and Orlando Magic in a 12 year career.

Most recently Rooks had been working as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.

NOTE: Rooks does the same day as a chess grandmaster -- can't make that shit up!

Not a good year for Butler Bulldog basketball.

Gene Guarilia died Sunday at home in Duryea. He was 79. He played on the Bill Russell era Celtics.

Guarilia was able to say something few — perhaps no other — athletes can say.

“I won four championships in four years,” Guarilia said in a 2001 Times-Tribune story. “A perfect four for four.”

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will undergo back surgery Friday, the school announced Monday.

Krzyzewski is expected to coach Wednesday against Georgia Tech and then step away for the surgery to remove a fragment of a herniated disk in his lower back. The procedure has an anticipated recovery time of four weeks.

In and of itself sounds like nothing but he has had a pile of minor sugeries and hospital stays the past couple years. The link speaks to that fact.

Sister Maria Pares would say she stood “5 foot 3, maybe.”

Through her groundbreaking career as a coach and advocate for women’s athletics, she was a giant.

Pares died Friday from cancer complications. She was 75. .Pares was a pioneer in women’s sports while defying conventional beliefs about what a nun should be. She built a basketball dynasty at Sacred Heart Academy in the 1980s while simultaneously coaching at Canisius College.

Sounds like we may be moving this to the Suicidal Celebs post.

Yeah he was one of those big bodies that do ok in college muscling opponents around but don't have honest basketball skills to excel at the next level. Dime a dozen.
