Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted April 2, 2016 Okay, I just found a study that I might read through later: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3162886/ "Background Hip fractures represent one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in elderly people." Another article about it here: http://share.kaiserpermanente.org/article/elderly-women-who-break-a-hip-at-increased-risk-of-dying-within-a-year/ "“This finding suggests that it is the hip fracture itself that ultimately leads to death in these women. Even though they start out in excellent health the hip fracture is so devastating that many of them don’t recover,” said LeBlanc."
Cat O'Falk 3,290 Posted April 2, 2016 There's no way that she's going to die before she reaches at least, I'd say, 95. That is unless Prince Philip dies before that (which I can't see happening; he'll probably live to 100). I basically agree with what you are saying with the caveat that, at her age, all it would take would be for her to fall and break her hip for the whole situation to change dramatically overnight. As I have said many times before, I am in the camp that believes she'll go shortly after Phil, whenever that may be. 100 seems a long shot but he has kept on surprising us down the years and seems in good form just now. I think the DL Committee should definitely keep him on the list though as he is such an iconic figure he is what the DL is all about. Her mum had a hip replacement and lived a further seven years.

Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted April 19, 2016 The Queen's cousin again confirms the old girl won't abdicate: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-36077620 I realise that there is virtually zero chance of it happening but the thought occurred to me the other day that it would be interesting if QE2 died before the last Victorian goes, as their life would then span from the reign of Queen Vic to that of King Charlie. Not going to happen but still would be cool. That said, Doris Roberts was apparently active and seemingly healthy right up until her death yesterday when she just slipped away in her sleep, so anything can happen at 90+. Last week, she was at a conference discussing the representation of women in Hollywood so she was alert and well until the end. Of course, she wouldn't have had her health monitored as closely and as often as the Queen does but it shows that it does still become a game of chance to some degree at that age. A lot can happen in that time.

Odds are Queen Liz will be around for a while yet, and will outlive one of her children.
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted April 20, 2016 People sometimes used to speculate that Charlie would not live to take the throne. That is starting to look a little more plausible as he will be 70 in three years' time. Obviously he has a lot of factors in his favour: the longevity of both his parents and also his grandmother and the pampered lifestyle and top-class medical treatment. However, with the likes of Bowie, Rickman and so on all dropping relatively young, it does make one wonder about his mortality. Also, his appearance has aged a lot in recent years and he looks worse than his dad sometimes, IMHO. Would be interesting if that negative sentiment towards William and Kate in the tabloids above gains traction with the public over time and Charlie then dies young... Anyway, enough speculation. Here is an early report on the old gal's birthday from Australia: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-21/queen-elizabeth-celebrates-her-90th-birthday/7344226

Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted April 21, 2016 Another article on the Queen's secrets for a long life: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-36076615 Looking back on the highs and lows of her reign: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/queen-elizabeth-ii-90-highs-lows-reign-38533302 Finally, "The Queen and the rise of the 90+ Club" has lots of interesting stats (which will no doubt depress DeathListers). Some quotes: As far as the Queen is concerned, the most important change in her lifetime is life expectancy. When Princess Elizabeth was born in 1926, the life expectancy at birth for a girl was 61.5 years and 57.6 years for a boy. Now it’s 82.8 and 79.1 years respectively and she has to send so many telegrams to congratulate people on their 100th birthday that her office has taken on extra staff in order to cope. . .. as the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday she lives in a country where, on average, all of her subjects being born now can expect to become nonagenarians. The next years of the Queen’s reign will see the emergence of the super centenarians – those aged 110 or more – as a distinct segment of the population. It is estimated that one-third of children born in the Queen’s 90th year will live to be 100 or more. Of course this has the well-established caveat of “if current trends continue”.
