There's a theme team idea in that I'd be bound...

Layla's the last track on the list. He's still locked up, as this delightful Californian Prison Service search engine will tell you:

avxWFx4.png

Being as he played the drums on "Apache" by the the Incredible Bongo Band, he may be the second most-sampled musician of all time, just behind perennial deathlist possibility Clyde Stubblefield.

I obviously couldn't see the whole list.

Why don't we have a website like that? Though we do have the Daily Mail.

Gregory Coleman (the Amen Break) and George "Buzzy" Bragg ("It's A New Day" by Skull Snaps) both died in the mid-2000s. The problem with a lot of these legendary breaks is that they were played by session musicians who then vanished off the face of the earth. For instance, "The Big Beat" (as sampled, most notably, in "Ain't No Half Stepping" and "Fix Up Look Sharp") was drummed on by a guy called Bucky Ballard, who appears nowhere on the internet except in the listings for that one Billy Squire album.

Well, except this obituary of someone who might possibly be his dad.

That druggie Strange Fruit show kicks off in just over an hour on Miskin Radio.

Winterset/your choices packed into hour two. Some good stuff all round, mind.

Obviously, our new best friends at Gonzo Multimedia will get round to making it available on demand, but it's there tonight for anyone logging on from 10-00pm

Ah, that's a shame, late notice and a few too many beers at Kent CCC put the kibosh on it for me.

Which version did you play?

The other presenter dropped a can of mushrooms on his poorly foot (seriously), and he's laid up to the point of signed off. Meaning...the two hour drugs special is being repeated right now. Your shout outs and a crowd pleaser for the planet's many Winterset fans are crammed into the second hour, from 11-00:

The Winterset revival starts HERE and ends only when Glastonbury calls with a pyramid stage Saturday closing slot, or summat!

Reet gang, back from a couple of days break in Guernsey (perfect destination if - like me - you think the whole concept of holidays somewhat over-rated). Did amuse myself doodling druggie show ideas over there, so summat will get pre-recorded over the next week or so and I'll give yers a heads up when we broadcast it.

I know it's a bit of a woolly genre, but how's about a blue-eyed soul night?

Starter for 10:

60s -

Charlie Rich - When Something Is Wrong with my Baby

Bill Medley - If This Were the Last Song

The Action - I'll Keep Holdin' On

The Birds - No Good Without You

Laura Nyro - Stoned Soul Picnic

Young Rascals - How Can I Be Sure?

The Waphphle - I Want You

Tony Joe White - Rainy Night in Georgia

Dion - Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever

PJ Proby - You Make Me Feel Like Someone

70s

Colin Blunstone - Mary Won't You Warm My Bed

Bobby Charles - Street People

Ace - How Long

Eddie Hinton - I Can't Be Me

80s

Elvis Costello - High Fidelity

Squeeze - Tempted

Culture Club - Time (yes, really)

Orange Juice - All That Ever Mattered

Prefab Sprout - Hallelujah

90s and beyond

Under the Cold Blue Stars - Josh Rouse

What Else Could It Be - Lambchop

Sweet Days Waiting - Teenage Fanclub

I Love You - The Bees

She Don't Hear Your Prayer - Cousteau

Aim High - Paul Weller

But if you even think about playing Holding Back the Years I'll firebomb the station

Damn shame you don't drive HMBWA; you'd probs get a job at the station and have a shot at delivering the blue-eyed soul stuff yourself. It's not a million miles away from a strange soul thing we were planning ourselves to include a few odd covers - Ash doing Get Ready Here I Come and the like. Some good calls - fucking great call re Culture Club and they get ignored so bad they're probably one of our acts now.

I do drive, I just don't have a car. If you can send a Rolls Royce Corniche and a case of Dom Perignon I'll be happy to declare Culture Club the best band of all time on air.

My humble little show, now until midnight, is made up entirely of stuff never intended for commercial release. As these words hit the screen I'm playing a lengthy chunk from American radio years ago concerning satanic messages in rock records:

Listening to it. Spin it backwards, see if you can hear the voices.

It would involve a shit load of pre-recording and editing but I was wondering about dropping backwards announcements and the like into a Halloween show next year.

Singapore radio celebrity Drew Crothers - I know this is quite obscure (although we may have some members from Singapore?), but the reason I post it is that I went to school with this chap when I lived in Australia as a child - very funny kid and massively brainy.

If you watch the early 90s "Celebrity Squares" repeats on Challenge, a fun game is to see if you can get three-in-a-row of now dead contestants. Yesterday gave you Wendy Richard, Willie Rushton and Dame Hilda Bracket as a diagonal, with John Inman, Joan Sims and Tony Gerrard as additional stiffs.
