Fair enough.

195 teams have been registered so far. A couple of interesting picks but a I get the feeling there will be a lot more to come as the big guns are keeping their powder dry...

Indeed. I have what I'm 95% sure is a unique pick and I'm repeatedly refreshing his Facebook fanpage to see if he's going to make it to the start line.

Ray Collins, original vocalist for the Mothers of Invention, has caused me to go back to my Google Document notes file swearing aged 75.

Death is indeed a bastard...

What a great thread, and I really should be thinking next year about favourites who are reaching ... a certain age.

Love the music, but their activities back in the day don't do them any favours on actuarial tables.

Uh-oh, didn't think to check this thread when I reported his death on the Dead Pop Stars line. Dunno, we like to think he'd have wanted it that way. Not entirely sure myself. At the very least he'd have wanted to see some result from the (barely dry ink on) the contract he and the band had just signed.

Dunno, we like to think he'd have wanted it that way. Not entirely sure myself.

Several obits for Farren have embraced the "he went out in a blaze of glory, dying doing what he loved" angle, including The Guardian ("he died a true performer's death: on the stage of a crowded club on a Saturday night with applause still ringing in his ears"), Los Angeles Times ("I'd say it was fitting that he should die on stage except that he should not have died so young."), Dangerous Minds ("He died with his boots on. Like a rockstar."), and The Great Wen ("It seems crude to say that is how Mick Farren would want to go, but it's certainly no great surprise that this vivacious ball of hair and action, the closest thing London ever came to producing an Abbie Hoffman, should die while giving it all to his great love rock and roll.").

The Independent went so far as to say:

"It will no doubt serve as a piece of modern cultural mythology that Mick Farren 'died as he would have wanted', collapsing onstage on Saturday night at London's Borderline, playing a gig with a reformed version of his 1960s group the Deviants, a concert that he had been advised not to go ahead with on medical advice."

Farren himself, however, was far less sanguine about the prospects of ageing and death. In an interview earlier this year, speaking about Wilko Johnson, he said:

"He's just one of the crew, one of my mates. And he hasn't played in Brighton, so I haven't actually hung out with him since I've been back, except to talk on the phone, and now the motherfucker's gonna die on us. Don't get old, man; it's like being in combat, people drop dead every fucking week. It's very, very depressing."

Never heard of him or them but I guess a prime target for entry on my next Rotten.com Deadpool entry. I want to crack the ten out of ten taboo.

Good chance of an obit if The Grauniad have the story.

Nailed on obit chances, frankly. Anyone at uni in the seventies - and therefore likely to be broadsheet reading now - would have known summat of him. Not neccessarily from their own fandom but because there would be some cheery nutter around the place who'd be your go to guy for weed and would doubtless own and play albums like Flying Teapot to anyone who came into his room. I've seen and admired Gong a few times, kinda sad, but Allen appears to be embracing it all.

Well, if he did die today he's earned a lucky 13th bonus for the two teams who picked him on the DDP.

There's no extra point for Friday 13th, is there?

Let's hope it was the 13th local time in Australia. I don't think there is an additional bonus for it being for a Friday.

Amongst the tributes is this from music journalist veteran Everett True:

In some respects, Allen invented punk rock. Too extravagant a claim? Do the maths. Without Soft Machine, there’d have been no Pink Floyd, at least the version that evolved after Syd Barrett left. And without Pink Floyd, nothing for the punks to kick against.

Which is bollocks, frankly.
