Nino Escalera, the first black player to play for Cincinatti Redlegs (as they were known at the time) has died aged 91.

nino_escalera_autograph.jpg

He played one season in the majors, 1954, often as a pinch-hitter, hitting .159 for the season.

After his playing career ended, he scouted for the Mets and Giants.

Dick Tidrow, twice World Series Winner with the Yankees, has died aged 74. He's also credited with being part of the organisation that helped build a dynasty that won three World Series for the Giants.

I'm aware this has been reported elsewhere, but his claim to fame is his game, not his name.

Former A’s player and current broadcaster Ray Fosse is taking a leave of absence due to cancer treatment. Apparently he has been battling cancer privately for 16 years.

Groth's death leaves 10 baseball players who played in the 1940's that are alive (According to BR Bullpen).

Eddie Robinson is 100 but is in decent shape. George Elder is also 100. The other 8 alive are Chris Haughey, Eddie Basinki, Tommy Brown, Carl Erskine, Larry Miggins, Cloyd Boyer and Bobby Shantz. All these guys with the exception of Robinson (who created a podcast) live private lives and have not had media mentions in basically forever.

Twitter reporting the death of Bill Sudakis, a journeyman infielder who played 530 games between 1968 and 1975 with six teams combined, has died. He was 75. (Will add a better source if one becomes available.)

Ray Fosse infamously had his career altered after Pete Rose barrelled into him at home plate at the 1970 All-Star Game while trying to score. Fosse was never the same catcher again.
