Juan Pujalte, a member of the Valverde team, has died. He was 18. Pujalte's death was confirmed by the Cycling Federation of the Region of Murcia, in Spain.

Natalya Melyokhina was born in Chelyabinsk, she died aged 61, She became world champion in the women's team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in 1987 and finished second in 1990. In 1990 she also won stage 5 of the Tour Cycliste Féminin de la Drôme and finished second in the general classification.

Horrible looking crash in the Basque Tour that’s taken out three of the pre TDF favourites, Vingegaard, Roglic and Evenepoel. Hopefully no one is too badly hurt, they all seem conscious at least.

Imerio Massignan was born in Valmarana di Altavilla Vicentina and died in Novi Ligure at the age of 87, he was an Italian professional cyclist. A pure climber, he debuted as a professional at the 1959 Giro d'Italia, finishing 5th overall. This was followed by a series of good placings in subsequent editions, including a 2nd place overall in the 1962 Giro, in the Tour de France he won the Mountains classification in 1960 and 1961 (he was the winner of an older edition still alive, now this is the Spaniard Aurelio González Puente champion in 68), when he also finished in 4th place overall. Last season he also took second place in the Giro di Lombardia

Louis Bergaud was born in Jaleyrac, France and died at the age of 95, he competed in the Tour de France in 1954 (7th place), 1958 (9th place and winner of stage 13) and 1961 (winner of stage 5)

André Dupré was born in Ligueux and died in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles at the age of 93, the Frenchman participated in the 1955 Tour de France

Dag Erik Pedersen was born in Skien, Norway and died in Helgeroa, Norway aged 64, was a Norwegian cyclist with a long career as a professional. He won 3 stages at the Giro d'Italia and placed 4th in the road race at the 1981 World Championships. He won a total of 43 professional races in his 12 years in Italy and the Netherlands. He won the Norwegian National Road Racing Championship in 1992 (winner of a more recent edition to die, before it was Bjorn Stenersen, who won in 1990 and died in '98 at age 28). After retiring as a cyclist, he began working for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, where until his death he worked as an anchor. He won the award for best news and sports anchor in Norway in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2008. He spoke fluent English, German, Italian, French, Dutch and basic Spanish.

Big crash in the Dauphiné today involving at least 50 riders. Looks like a lot of rash and bone injuries but nothing life-threatening. Stage was neutralised and probably cancelled.

I’m sorry for stepping on Diego’s cleats, but I’m reporting the death of Gilbert Desmet, a Belgian who was the oldest living TDF yellow jersey wearer and came 4th in 1962. Won over 100 races No link because Ned Boulting just mentioned on the telly coverage.

And here is, in his late 80s, looking as proud as a peacock and as pleased as Punchinello.

I thought that accolade was still Antonin Rolland who turns 100 in September. Certainly was according to this article from March.

Hoy has returned to motor racing as well as maintaining quite a busy business schedule and television commitments. Without knowing what cancer it is, and the fact he looks well, I am dropping him from shortlists.

Tour De France winner Tadej Pogacar is being compared to Eddy Merckx now, so I wanted to look up the latter.

The surgery in April was the latest I could find, but it sounds like Merckx' health is not all that good. He lost a lot of weight, got a meter of intestines removed, suffered a fall in 2019 and has had a pacemaker since 2013. I ... think ... an entry on the DeathList could be justified.

Peter Procter, picked in quite a few DP's I believe, died earlier today.

 

There will be a proper obituary on its way soon from either the BRDC or one of the cycling websites.

 

I had a lot of correspondence with him between 2020 and 2023 and he was a very nice man. RIP.

Actually died on Thursday. If you didn't know he had cancer, you would've been surprised by his death as he looked quite well in the last picture of him on his sons Facebook post.
