People Who Are Dead According To Wikipedia...

Recommended Posts

Wikipedia is saying YACHT-man Olin Stephens died on the 13th of september.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olin_Stephens

But i can't find any other sources on this report.

It is never a good idea to go by what wikipedia says without having a good news source to back it.

They do call it right sometimes, but most of the time it is shite.

Wikipedia is very annoying when it comes to false claims of dead celebrities.

It annoys the hell out of me. A few weeks ago, wikipedia claimed that Adam West (of Batman fame) died and even included several dead links to "confirm" his death! Of course, the mayor of Quahog, Rhode Island is still very much alive.

The Wikipedia page of Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was President of Afghanistan for five weeks in 2001, states that he died on September 15th. I can't find any news reports to confirm his demise, so I'm guessing he lives, but he does seem like quite an obscure choice for a Wiki vandal.

But they often are - probably because they think they're too obscure & nobody would notice. If you put.. Amy Winehouse, say, it would be ignored.

But the Wiki police are getting stringent. When I posted Phil Hill's death on there before the official press announcement it was removed after a mere two minutes - by the time I had a citation - it had gone!

Where they in denial or something?

Wikinews is recording the dead of actor John Barrowman (never heard of him)

http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Torchwood_star...sh?curid=129526

probably a major mistake because when I link to his wikipedia-page he is still very much alive.

No, the article makes no mention of him dying and looking at the history it never has. He escaped a car acrash filming Fifth Gear without serious injury. As for having never heard of him, you obviously don't live in Britain, it's hard not to here...

Although we already have a rumours page, I thought it was time a thread was creating for people solely declared dead on Wikipedia but with no obituaries yet circulating the internet. Over the past few months or so I've been scribbling down names of people who have been declared dead on the site and 90% of them turned out to be true, but in some instances I had to wait several weeks for anything to come out.

Some obituaries can be quite tricky to find so it'd be good for some of the more experienced deathpoolers to be informed so they can help dig an obit out whether it be found on Google, through Twitter (which I've found to be the most useful recently) or even an archived search.

4 names for now, all declared dead on Wiki in the last few days, no obits as of yet!

Sheila Wright (b. 1925) Labour MP; 1979-1983

http://en.wikipedia....i/Sheila_Wright

*Page says she died on July 5 after a long illness - nothing on net, but nor can I find any pics/much info about her. I reckon she was a really obscure backbencher.

EDIT: death notice - http://www.bmdsonline.co.uk/28909485?s_source=tmmi_bmem

Draga Matkovic (b. 1907) Croatian-born German classical pianist

http://en.wikipedia..../Draga_Matkovic

*Deutsch language page states she died in Bad Reichenhall on July 29th - I believe she's also a DDP pick

EDIT: obituary - http://www.domus-mea...hren-gestorben/

Benjamin Walker (b. 1913) British Indian-born English writer

http://en.wikipedia...._Walker_(author)

*According to page, died 30 July aged 99 in Teddington, England. Uses several pseudonyms.

EDIT: obituary - http://www.suttongua...enjamin_Walker/

V. Dakshinamoorthy (b. 1919) Indian carnatic musician

http://en.wikipedia....Dakshinamoorthy

*Page edited to say he died today (Aug 2nd)

EDIT: obituary - http://www.deccanchr...thy-passes-away

I will post more as soon as they flag up on my watchlist. Hopefully posting them here will speed up things up and also help to dispel rumours.

I wonder if there are a few earlier deaths on Wikipedia that DDP Towers have failed to spot?

Probably...

Wiki edited to say 107 year-old Rose Morat has died.

http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Rose_morat

She was famously beaten up and mugged when she was 101 but got the last laugh as the felon who committed the crime against her got 75 years in prison!

EDIT: obituary - http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Rose-Morat&lc=1051&pid=166320771&mid=5627420

Benjamin Walker - http://www.suttonguardian.co.uk/announcements/deaths/obituary/10602019.George_Benjamin_Walker/

Meanwhile Roberta Cowell is definitely dead, but Wikipedia won't accept the original research of someone who has obtained her death certificate, but if you have any power, Uli, Roberta Elizabeth Marshall Cowell died in West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth on 11th October 2011, from natural causes, aged 93.

Her last place of residence was in sheltered accommodation in Hampton, Middlesex.

Cheers for the links OoO, I've edited my post to include them.

As for Draga Matkovic, an obit has sprung up here > http://www.domus-mea.de/2013/08/draga-matkovic-im-alter-von-105-jahren-gestorben/ so she did indeed die at the end of last month at the age of 105.

A DDP miss unless the Telegraph have a really slow day within the next few months...

Two months later and finally found a death notice for Sheila Wright, former Labour MP for Birmingham who died on July 5th aged 88.

http://www.bmdsonlin...ource=tmmi_bmem

Very unusual for any British MP's death to go completely unnoticed by the mainstream press and their obituary writers.

That is annoying. (S)he was a unique pick for me in the DDP and the one on whom I'd played my joker. But according to the ever reliable Wikipedia "Her funeral was attended by only six people and (on her instructions) was unpublicised - her death was not publicly reported until two years later, when a profile of her was printed in The Independent newspaper in October 2013."That's a cruel way to spoil our game... :banghead:

Nobel laureate Sir John Cornforth's page was edited yesterday to say "my grandad passed away this morning blah blah blah"... either the media are really slow or it was a hoax.

Actress Eleanor Parker's page was edited tonight to say she had passed. Also seeing a few tweets emerging... worth keeping an eye on!

EDIT: Silent-era actress Carla Laemmle's page edited to say she died today as well.

And so we wait... God our media are shit, or I'm gullible. One of the two.
