Sir Creep 7,070 Posted February 29 Ecuador’s high court on Wednesday decriminalized euthanasia and ordered lawmakers and health officials to draft rules and regulations for the procedure. The decision of Ecuador’s Constitutional Court came in response to a lawsuit from a terminally ill woman diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS, who had argued that she should be allowed to have death with dignity. That's all very well, but what is a "double suicide pod" and why is it necessary? Are they going to be gassed? Several years ago it was reported that an elderly couple had been found dead in a village near where I live. It turned out to be a retired doctor and his wife (he had been my doctor when I was a child and was lovely). She had dementia. He of course as a doctor had access to the means to peaceful death. Nitrogen is added to the pod, restricting oxygen supply, as Mr & Mrs Scott sail off together into the sweet hereafter, or something. So, yes, in a roundabout way they are being gassed. Rather them than me though. There must be a greener and more pleasant way to get this done.

I think I'd be afraid to actually sign up for it, but at the same time I don't want to rumble on in to my nineties and hundreds if I've no reasonable quality of life and need 36 tablets a day just to keep my battery at 1% instead of 0%. We all die at some point and I'd rather die in control than waste away.

It rather reminds me of a scene from Open All Hours Granville: You won't live forever, you know. Arkwright: Well I'm going to give it a damn good try, aren't you?
YoungWillz 21,076 Posted September 13 I see assisted dying is back on the news, recommended for the UK by a Citizen's Jury. A matter of time before Esther Rantzen is back to weigh in - if she is well enough.
alt obits guy 3,371 Posted October 1 Not an assisted suicide death, but the death of an assisted suicide advocate. Dr Dániel Karsai, who in June 2024 fought and lost in the European Court of Human Rights, which declared Hungarian laws denying euthanasia did not constitute an infringement on the fundamental rights of Hungarian citizens, has died. He was 47. Karsai lost the same argument in the European Court of Justice in September 2024. He was afflicted by ALS. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c07npl5gyrno
