Despite only wrestling for two years, he was the ninth NWA World Heavyweight Champion, beating Ed "Strangler" Lewis in a worked match. He was then beaten by Stanislaus Zbyszko in a double-cross 97 days later, in arguably pro-wrestling's first great swerve.
