The rest of his career, which lasted from 1976 to 1981, was spent in the minor American Hockey League. He was 76. After his playing career, Murdoch became an assistant coach with the Flames for several years before taking on head coaching duties with the Chicago Black Hawks (now Blackhawks), and Winnipeg Jets. He was later an associate coach with the expansion San Jose Sharks.
