Surprised nobody has mentioned Herbert Blomstedt (95) before here, the oldest (professional) conductor still performing.

That title actually belongs to Cao Peng (1925).

The great Leif Segerstam says he has been wheelchairbound since a bad bout of covid last year:

Segerstam says that music is his nourishment.

Otherwise, not much happens during the day, everyday life mostly consists of watching TV. In the interview, Segerstam was asked what he does.

- I breathe and sleep and eat and piss and shit. And if I take SPAM, then something else, Segerstam tells HS.

Edit: Spam meaning the sexual dysfunction medicine. He was one of the three Finnish maestros I mentioned almost three years ago - the others, Kaj Chydenius and Jorma Panula are still alive too. Panula is still working at 93, Chydenius has unfortunately been very quiet in recent years and if he died tomorrow it would not suprise me at all.

Leif Segerstam dead at 80. "After a short illness".

He composed a high number of symphonies - over 370 at the last count - of which only around a dozen have been recorded so far.

Avro Part's 2024 includes receiving another major honour - Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society. He showed up in September - a few days after turning 89 - to receive it. The man is as quiet and devout as his music, but he's also obitable as fuck!

American composer George Wilkins has died aged 90. Surprised the guy was not a recognised Disney Legend - if you have ever been to Disney World, particularly Epcot, his work is everywhere.

Philip Glass and Godfrey Reggio a few weeks back - well, either that or Simon and Garfunkel's homeless twin brothers!

Aye, a timely reminder that the film director turns 85 next year, looks like shit and remains a shoo-in for liberal leaning broadsheet obits

Lifetime achievement award on the cover of  ‘Gramophone Awards 2024’ with a four page article covering his career.  I found a copy of the magazine.

No useful information.  States his diagnosis in July 2021 and how he’s here three years later ‘in defiance of medical expectations’.  It mentions his January 2024 San Francisco dates and at the time the article was written, his expected September New York opening season concerts.

He did make this engagement (New York Classical Review) and gave this picture.

The bloated abdomen suggests ascites, fluid build up, which can be caused by cancer or heart failure (unlikely as he’s well spoken with no shortness of breath in the quoted link, but can’t see his torso).  He’s had this bigger frame since at least his San Francisco dates in January.

Only other worthy information was his 'bout of confusion' during the May 2024 performance with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

He was in Houston in November and he has 2025 dates planned – Los Angeles in February and Miami in March.
