Stage play and chamber music composer Adrian Sutton announces an incurable cancer diagnosis but lets us guess what kind it is:

Adrian Sutton update:

The tumours have shrunk after intense therapy, so now he's on chemo break. He's been very productive.

Likely the most important living Italian pianist, Giovanni Allevi, diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Only 53. Don't think he will go anytime soon, but hard to think he will be alive in ten years.

Giovanni Allevi denies rumours on his death, but has been in hospital for more than a year.

Boris Brott, the artistic director of the Orchestre classique de Montréal and one of Canada's best ever known conductors, has died. He was 78. Brott was the victim of a hit-and-run. (Brott was, at one time, a school mate of my father's.)

Carl Davis, of the Grand National music (amongst many other things), dead

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/03/bafta-winning-composer-carl-davis-dies-aged-86

The film the music came from was Champions. I think it's a wonderful piece.

Nothing as yet on the BBC which is a pretty poor show given they used it so often and most British people will have heard it countless times over the years.

This composition was my introduction to Carl Davis. It is the theme to a 13-part documentary miniseries from around 1979-1980. I saw Carl Davis conduct live during my one visit to London at the Dominion Theatre, in 1989, an orchestra performing Chaplin's score for " City Lights."

( i don't care that msc and imelda don't acknowledge my Hollywood theme video. It was a real treat for this North American to see Carl Davis in concert, and hear Spike Milligan do vocal effects live, and yes I have the Hollywood miniseries episodes)

He also did The World At War, which I found out just now. Another evocative soundscape

In 1979; the World at War team did a similar documentary series on Hollywood and the birth of the film industry. Worth a watch if it's online. Carl Davis did the theme for that too.

Daniel Barenboim tried to conduct and did a terrible job in Lucerne:

https://slippedisc.com/2023/08/rough-landing-for-barenboim-in-lucerne/

Since conductors like to think they're Gods, he'll die the minute nobody books him anymore. Comments also mention a serious vascular illness.

The legends John Williams (91) and Seiji Ozawa (88) earlier this month:

Williams seems to be doing excellent for 91. Well enough to travel to Japan, conduct there, walk around without aid. Ozawa has advanced dementia and other ailments and while he has been ill for years his health seems to have declined a lot again since his previous appearance 10 months ago.

If he's still alive in 2024, Seiji Ozawa should be in the deathlist !
