Alexandre do Nascimento rumored dead late last month. Instead he was "spending a peaceful Sunday with his family"

Edit - 29th of June - Alexandre do Nascimento again dead on facebook. Post is from 26 hours ago, probably another hoax but let's see...

Alexandre do Nascimento (wikifinally dead at 99.

A DDP pick for 2 teams.

Nascimento was the last living cardinal born in 1925. The oldest living cardinal is now Estanislao Esteban Karlic (wiki) of Argentina who is 98.

Nascimento was also the last surviving cardinal who was barred from voting in the 2005 conclave (which elected Benedict) because he was 80+ and thus ineligible to vote.

He was undergoing treatment for apparently intestinal cancer in 2016 and had a nasty fall in 2017, while in hospital another tumor was discovered (some articles said a recurrence). He was said to be in failing health in 2022 and has seemingly suffered from dementia for a few years.

I can't see him making it as close to 100 as do Nascimento did, but he might outlive (second-oldest cardinal) Emmanuel Wamala who has been in failing health for even longer.

(the unknown birthday of Cardinal John Njue given as simply '1944' means he will certainly be 80 by the end of 2024)

In early April I first noticed that John Njue has been assigned a birthday of 1 January 1946.  The assigned birthday does slightly alter the possible dates for a 2025 consistory.

---

It is one year since Francis’ last consistory.  At that time, he created 21 new cardinals, 18 young enough to be electors.  The total number of cardinal electors was then 137, a record.  As there have been no deaths of cardinals under the age of 80 to date, the drop to 120 is still on course for 24 December 2024 when Cardinal Oswald Gracias turns 80.

With the note about regarding John Njue, the number of electors will fall to 119 on 22 January 2025.  The next elector to be 80 occurs on 1 March.  Easter Sunday is 20 April, making Ash Wednesday on 5 March.  Over Lent, a further two electors turn 80, bringing the count to 116.  And no consistories happen during the Lenten period.

Francis has held a consistory annually, barring 2021 and now 2024. The first two consistories Francis held were in February 2014 and February 2015, so before Lent is possible.  Based on precedent, at minimum, Francis has given ~1 month notice that a consistory will be held.  For these larger ‘super’ ones (2022, 2023), there has been 3 months’ notice.

After Easter 2025 the most likely month is June, again a month where consistories have been held (2017, 2018).  This would also have the number down to 114 by 15 June.

Although 5 of the 9 consistories have been held in the second half of the year, the other 4 mentioned make it likely another will be held in February 2025, as five will have turned 80 by mid-June.  Francis has held them as soon as the 119 number is hit (2023, 2020) or at 118 (2019).   2025 sees a total of 13 cardinals turn 80, and there are three (one being Njue) in January 2026 (see table hidden).  Also note that there is a large gap from 18 July 2026 to 16 January 2027 where no current cardinal turns 80.

Based on the potential size of the consistory we could get notice in late 2024, a potential gauge on how his health is.  Recall that JPII held his ‘super’ ones in the failing health years of 2001 and 2003.

The nationality of the new cardinals are:

Italy with three new cardinals and then Perù, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Japan, Philippines, Serbia, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Belgium, Indonesia, France, Canada, Lithuania, Ucraine, United Kingdom and India.

Italy will have another one cardinal but it will be older than 80 years old so it will no part of a future Conclave.

Archbishop of Toronto beating out American potential cardinals is a bit of a surprise.

Namely Angelo Acerbi, 99(!!), who, provided they both make it to 8th December, will take over from Estanislao Esteban Karlic as oldest living cardinal.

Is cardinal Francis Arinze in failing health? I can't find anything at the moment, yet I have reasons to suspect this.

Plus the American church leaders were very pro-Benny and all of these moves have been about promoting folk on Francis's side of their Vatican dispute so they can hold power when he dies.

Yep. Dolan of New York reaches the mandatory retirement age early next year. So would imagine whoever replaces him will become a cardinal next year at some stage. Would assume Francis is playing his card close to his chest regarding his choice of replacement for Dolan hence why no US Cardinals this time around.

It will likely be Tobin of Newark - already a Cardinal.

Gave a talk at his seminary for its centenary. Looks to be in fine shape.

Pope Francis has informed that 72-year-old Spanish Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot is in critical health condition:

"The head of the Dicastery, Cardinal Ayuso, is in very poor health and in the final stages of life."
