The "Bodies on the Beach" Serial Killer

Recommended Posts

If moderators believe he isn't worthy of his own thread please add this to a general serial killers thread if there is one. I thought there was but couldn't find it.

I thought there was a serial killers thread too. Apparently there is a new nutter on the loose in New York, the "Bodies on the Beach" murderer. He has killed at least eight prostitutes so far:

http://abcnewsradioonline.com/national-new...d-on-beach.html

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40656155/ns/us...ime_and_courts/

So will he be caught or kill himself?

Some more about it here:

Apparently the police have found all of these corpses but not the missing prostitute for whom they were searching in the first place:

May I make a suggestion to the Mods?

Could we change this thread title to cover all serial killers.

Suggested title "Serial Killers, watch it or he'll have you for breakfast!"

Thank you.

I would be inclined to leave things as they stand at the moment, maybe review this thread next year depending on any new health reports on Stephen Griffiths.

Serial killers Peter Sutliffe, Ian Huntley and Ian Brady all have their own threads. Most others are discussed in this thread.

Quite right. I've my own death-related sandpit to run rather than bossing other people running theirs! :)

All suggestions are welcome TMIB and yours was a good one.

Thanks for not pointing out my faux pas too - Ian Huntley is not a (known) serial killer :) .

Latest on the "Bodies on the Beach" nutter: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1517471...er-eight-bodies

"The serial killer appears to possess a unique understanding of police investigative techniques and was compared to ‘Dexter’ in an American television drama series that centres on a forensic bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police department."

[snip]

"If you look at other serial killers, most times bodies are left in different locations and even different states. This is unique because the killer is using this (Gilgo Beach) as a dumping ground."

If the serial killer theory is confirmed, it would be the third such case in the region over the past 20 years.

I note that Stephen Griffiths' pseudonym Ven Pariah already brings up 30,100 references when searched in Google. I wonder what the number will be a year from now?

If moderators believe he isn't worthy of his own thread please add this to a general serial killers thread if there is one. I thought there was but couldn't find it. Anyhow I'm sure this nutter is going to be collecting quite a few more column inches in the years ahead so perhaps he deserves one on his own.

I worked on some of the Sutcliffe killings many years ago. For some reason police then were reluctant to link some of the attacks and it seems things haven't changed. I wonder how many more there would have been in this case had the murder not been videoed. Are video taped murders rare?

Excuse my ignorance, but what does Stephen Griffiths have to do with these latest serial killings?!

Now there's an interesting thought. Would a judge (or jury) accept forum posts and their date/time stamps as well as their IP addresses as evidence?

Hein

That did cross my mind when I first read about the murders. ;)

The serial killer appears to possess a unique understanding of police investigative techniques...

Probably a result of too much CSI/NCSI/CSI Miami/ NYCSI.

Latest: http://www.longislandexchange.com/articles...ler-041211.html

"Some reports have also stated that police are looking at the similarities between the four women found in December and the four found in Atlantic City in 2006. If the two cases are connected, it could be possible that the killer is targeting women in beach town communities. Other reports have stated that a similar case involving four female victims occurred in Daytona Beach in 2008 and that at least one Atlantic City victim spent time on Long Island prior to her death."

Well, the link I added in the post above said that, "Most of these offenders are not high-tech people, these are often unemployed, blue-collar types... high intelligence is not a prerequisite for a sexually motivated murderer.." but this one states that the profiler types feel that "the killer is a white male with above average intelligence, who leads a normal life and is socially organized. They claim that he is not a loner and that his IQ may even exceed 120." In other words, they have no idea what type of person they are looking for.... I have always suspected profiling is a load of pseudo-scientific bollocks. ;)

By the way, thanks for splitting this off into its own thread. Some suggestions for the subtitle:

"Are the sands of time running out for the beach killer?"

or

"Life's a beach and then you die."

Reading that first report I could imagine US readers reacting more to the mention of "tick infested" scrub and poison ivy than the discovery of bodies. "Hey Marlene, says here, twenty police officers been treated for poison ivy. Can't be too careful. And them darn ticks are bad this year." It's like something out of a Larson cartoon.

The FBI are sending in surveillance aircraft(!) to help catch him: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1519806...al-killer-probe

This US journo has been watching too many films.

The swirling fog and drizzle accentuated the spookiness of the location and the physical challenges facing police as they race the onset of spring, when foliage will make the scrub even thicker.

Cape Fear? Sooner or later they're going to be quoting the local mayor telling everyone it's safe to go back on the beach.

Here's the real problem for the hacks:

Despite the absence of hard facts, local newspapers are quoting unnamed police sources on lurid details that point to an ever-more complex case.

Quote for next report? "We're going to need a bigger digger."

Were there pizza delivery moped tracks and midget sized footprints at the crime scenes? Also were the bodies wearing cloths?

Detailed article from the Australian, still speculating that he may be a policeman. He is apparently now known as the "Craigslist" Serial Killer:

***********

HE is already known as the Craigslist serial killer.

The most compelling theory about the identity of this murderer in New York state is his suggested connection to the law: that he is, or was, a police officer because of his clear knowledge of their investigative methods.

A malevolent attitude to prostitutes is immediately obvious - but are these murders the work of just one man?

[snip]

Authorities have identified only four of the victims, all prostitutes who advertised sexual services on the Craigslist website, and whose remains were found in a cluster last year.

Of these, murdered 24-year-old Melissa Barthelemy has provided New York state police with their best opportunity to profile the killer.

A month after Barthelemy disappeared in July 2009, the killer started calling her teenage sister in Buffalo on the western side of New York state.

In about six calls over five weeks, using the dead woman's mobile phone and speaking in a calm, low voice, the man taunted 16-year-old Amanda Barthelemy about her sister.

He told Amanda, among other things, that her sister was a prostitute - a secret Melissa had kept from her family while she supposedly trained to become a hairdresser in Manhattan.

The man never said Melissa was dead. And he kept his calls under three minutes before switching the phone off, making it difficult for New York police to pinpoint his location on the four occasions they tried to track him.

He called from heavily populated areas - typically Times Square and Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York city - although he once switched on Melissa's phone near Massapequa, on Long Island, not far from Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County, where her remains and those of three other women were later found.

The killer had a method for making first contact with his victims: he called them using disposable mobile phones that could not be traced.

The idea of a serial killer on the loose on New York state's Long Island has raised local anxiety to fever pitch.

Suffolk County police commissioner Richard Dormer has issued a caution to women in the escort business. "They should be very careful with their contacts," he said.

[snip]

Police are reluctant to say whether they have a suspect, or suspects, in mind, but the killer's movements suggest he is a Long Island local or a commuter from New York City, which is 45 minutes away by car. The four identified women were reportedly strangled, and their bodies could have been stored elsewhere for some time before being dumped.

The killer's decision to switch on Melissa Barthelemy's phone while on Long Island - which he did just once - may be a mistake that helps target his whereabouts.

Another clue suggesting he is a local is that one of the victims, Megan Waterman, often dropped off her four-year-old daughter with her grandparents before meeting clients on Long Island.

The recent finds and the decision of police to focus on particular areas of the long beach suggest they are being guided. But whether it is by the killer or some other information is unclear.

Detective Lieutenant Kevin Smith of Nassau Country, where the last two bodies were found, said: "For anyone to come out and say a specific person, a specific occupation or a specific type, I think is unfair. It's mere suspicion, it's mere speculation. Right now, it could be anybody."
