thefunkyfaz 51 Posted January 2, 2013 Well, last year was monumentally unsuccessful for me - joint 193rd for one team (4/20) and joint 322nd for t'other (3/20). Very poo-er. I think I've chosen better this year but the competition looks dangerously, erm, dangerous - some very good teams here. My picks for 2013 are..oh, just read the signature below... Pick 9: Arie Ribbens, Dutch entertainer Pick 13: Hans Wiegel, Politician Pick 15: Bob Smalhout Pick 20: Piet romeijn, Dutch footbal international, First person to call a referee “Hondenlul” (dog’s dick) Several brave picks there. 3, 9, 15 and 20 are not very likely to get UK obits. 13 will, but seems quite healthy. regards, Hein

Eesti 151 Posted January 3, 2013 I am wondering, why teams don't get points if a person dies in 2012 and gets obit 2013. I understand that in some point you have to draw a line, because otherwise the results wouldn't be final. Neverthe less it is sad to see people lose points. Wouldn't it be better, if the person gets points if the obit comes within the first week of new year? It is obvious, that you don't get points in 2013 if a person dies in 2012, but still - the obit question. What do others think?

I think if someone doesn't die in 2013, then they shouldn't count in 2013. It's unlucky in cases which happen on the 31st but any other cut-off point would be arbitrary. Toast 16,137 Posted January 3, 2013 I think it would be fair to allow points* for a late December death if the qualifying obit came on 1 January. This would not cause an undue delay to the final results. * just to clarify: points to count for the year ending, not the year just starting.

If one of your current picks dies on New Years Eve it is unlikely any death announcement will be until the next year. I think the previous years final points count should not be officially announced until at least 3rd/4th Jan.

As things stand, there is virtually no chance of scoring points from a perfectly legitimate pick if said pick expires on 31 December. This surely is not fair. I think there's a case for giving a day's grace - possibly two, but I wouldn't extend it further than that as a line must be drawn, as you say.

I suppose you're right, deaths are usually only reported the following day...I wouldn't have a problem with a day's grace but I do worry that people would then argue for the line to be pushed further and further out. The only reason I'd want the deadline to remain as it is would be to prevent arguments about the point at which a pick does or does not count. Failing to score points on a pick who died on the 31st may have to be an unlucky, unfair but necessary sacrifice in that scenario.

One of my picks for 2011 (Ronald Wolfe) died 18th December but no obit was forthcoming until January Did I feel aggrieved at missing out on the points? Not that much, and I soon got over any disappointment when the 2012 competition got under way. I understood the rules when I entered; it is when all's said and done, a bit of fun. As an academic exercise, maybe someone could have a look at the last couple of years or so and see if allowing early-next-year obits would have made any difference to the final result. Toast 16,137 Posted January 3, 2013 Yes, but at least you had a fair chance of an obit arriving. No chance of that with NYE stiffs. (Well, unless it's some sort of spectacular accident like a survivorless plane crash in which celeb is known to be involved)

Er...but it did win points! Unless of course you mean Ronald SEARLE! This has happened already this year, with Daphne Oxenford dying on 21st December but the obit only coming to light today. Of course I'll make an exception if the legit obit is published before 23:59 31st December but I'm only made aware of it after January 1st... Thing is, there has to be a cut off point. During the year, you often get the likes of the Independent printing obits months after the pick has died. In DDP, you are straight into the next year, no close season or nothing. I can't juggle around two years at the same time. If Father Time says it's 2013, then it's 2013 and on we go...

(Well, unless it's some sort of spectacular accident like a survivorless plane crash in which celeb is known to be involved) I suspect that may depend on who it is, and what time of day it happened. An announcement on the BBC (or other qualifying news-source) website would suffice, and if, say, Maggie dropped, or HM or Phil went, there's a pretty good chance one would be up more or less straight away if it were Ronald Coase or Lindsay Lohan, we might have to wait a bit longer. May as well say the 31st December doesn't count. Ok, maybe have until at least 23:59 on 1st Jan. That gives exactly 1 day for a new years eve hit to get an obit/mention and score points for the team. Surely a NYE hit must be given at least 24 hrs?
