Thought I'd try my hand at creating a another thread yet again.

now that the old girl has shuffled off,the UK's new elder statesman is John Major; although only 70 years of age he may warrant some commentary from time to time.

Does anyone have any thoughts.

I'm sorry, who were we talking about? I dozed off for a few seconds there.

Wait, I remember who you mean now. Wasn't he Terry Major-Ball's brother?

I think Gordon Brown and a small possibility Tony Blair will die before him.

He might be the British Jimmy Carter in longevity not policy obviously . :P

I had the same feeling about Gordon Brown but didn't like to say so because I always feel a bit sorry for him.

Just turned 70. The big C aside, he should last a couple more decades...

His love of cricket and his general demenour suggest a person who is not living life on the edge, the only danger I envisage is him just stopping and nobody noticing for a couple of days.

I think his acheivements are underrated and I am no Tory.

John Major has a while to go yet, I suspect.

May be our attention could be served on Ex Deputy Prime Ministers: Heseltine (Age), Prescott (Poor Diet), Clegg (er... Hated by Students)!

Did Mrs T have a Deputy? I can't imagine the power obsessed mother of all female prime ministers sharing any such role.

Did Mrs T have a Deputy?

Willie Whitelaw.

During his period as Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Lords, Margaret Thatcher relied on Whitelaw heavily, famously announcing that "every Prime Minister needs a Willie".

Thanks Doc for the link, Lord Howe is the other ex deputy PM to keep an eye on then,

although he didn't look too bad on all the Thatcher eulogies this week, I thought.

We have at least 8-10 years before Major to go.

Churchill (d. 1965)

Atlee (d. 1967)

Eden (d. 1977)

McMillan (d. 1986)

Douglas-Home (d. 1995)

Wilson (d. 1995)

Heath (d. 2005)

Callaghan (d. 2005)

Thatcher (d. 2013)

Or perhaps Major and Blair will go together one year like Douglas-Home & Wilson in 1995 and also Heath and Callaghan in 2005.

Happy birthday Fergie. You also share a birthday with Norman Tebbit. Just to add to your woes...
