Dambusters

Recommended Posts

I'm against his knighthood because he's only really getting it for still being alive. My own great grandfather was a Commando. He only got the Africa Star. They made a film about his exploits!

Anyway, my faith has been restored in the honours system as my nominee got his MBE (no, I wasn't the nominee).

My own great-grandfather won medals in the First World War, but no one's ever heard of him because he died in the 1940s when there was millions of them walking about.

Watching BBC2 The Dambusters: 70 years on. Seems there are only 2 surviving members, Canadian rear gunner Fred Sutherland, 89, and 91-year-old Squadron Leader George 'Johnny' Johnson. Excellent obit chances

Now 75 years on and Sutherland and Johnson still alive.

Johnson tells the Mail of his fortune at still being alive (which means he's going on my Poker Tourney team): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5735623/Britains-surviving-Dambuster-George-Johnny-Johnson-says-misses-crewmen.html

For a moment I thought this had been updated to say that Johnson had died.

Of course, Barnes Wallaces daughter Mary Stopes-Roe is bound to get an obit, born 1927

Report regarding the death of Mary Stopes-Roe:

Pretty good source but then again, it's just a Twitter report.

Haven't really checked but updated for John Fraser who now has a Telegraph Obit: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2020/11/09/john-fraser-prolific-film-actor-1950s-1960s-dubbed-handsome/

Not sure how Lawrence "Benny" Goodman fits in here, but "Dambusters" is all over his Wiki. I'm guessing because he was in 617 Squadron.

Anyway, he's being reported dead: https://www.key.aero/article/dambuster-lawrence-benny-goodman-dies

The wording on his Wiki page doesn't make it clear but I believe I'm correct in saying he was the last surviving pilot from the operation. Johnny Johnson survives and he was an air gunner.

News to me that there were any surviving pilots though.

He was indeed a pilot from 617 Squadron, but only began to fly missions with them over a year after the Dambusters raid.

According to imdb, Parry was born in 1944. Couldn't find anything about her from the last over 50 years...

Thanks all.

I wonder if there are any more general 617 Squadron members with a Wiki page still alive?

RIP.

I have him on a list somewhere...

I had him on lists for years - but not in 2022

Made his debut in my DDP team in 2015. His biog always had his year of birth wrong. On the plus side, I've still got time to find a replacement.
