The Hare's Death Pool

Recommended Posts

So do people who didn't die count as 366 points each? Otherwise I'd just pick 25 people I know would live and score zero and win.

Clearly I've assumed getting a bad early hit is better than no hit at all (see Harrington (HIT) and Feek on my team). Shoulda asked clarification beforehand I reckon.

You'd lose if you scored 0. People who live all count for nothing.

Wolfgang Schnur, "discoverer" and early mentor of Angela Merkel died on the 16th, my third hit:

http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/wolfgang-schnur-ist-tot-krebs-a-1072932.html

Why is my Hare's Deadpool team doing better than my deathrace team???

Edit: Just so that you know what this guy did... He was part of the revolutionary movement that toppled the dictatorship in East Germany. He was about to become the first democratically elected prime minister of East Germany when it was suddenly discovered that he was a STASI informant. The political scene of East Germany is still full of people with this kind of past, and it isn't even quite clear what Merkel did and by how much she was involved.

I could even imagine the odd DDP qualifying obit for him, but it was just too much of a gamble, in spite of his terminal prostate cancer.

My team:

11. Roger Willemsen (german intellectual/critic)

Roger Willemsen is dead. https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.spiegel.de/kultur/gesellschaft/roger-willemsen-ist-tot-a-1076272.html&prev=search

Date of Death 7 February 2016.

Willz! Now you're covering even obscure german deaths! How do you do that?

On a different note, they are all dying too fast, in the wrong competitions... I could have won the Deathrace three times now, if I had been a little more... skillful.

Some note aside, ever since I read Egon Bahr's last book shortly before he died, I wondered if I could curse someone like that. It didn't work with Helmut Schmidt though, because I never got to read his last book (Ihave read a couple of them though in the past 2 years). Also, two months ago I read Henry Kissinger's latest book, didn't work obviously. But I got Roger Willemsen's final book as a birthday present and read a couple of pages, so I'm 2 out of 4 now.

Firstly apologies for the wall of text that is contained within the post. Secondly I am delighted to announce Toast as 2015 Hares Death Pool winner. As always, it's worth double-checking your team to see if I've made a cock-up - it's possible (although unlikely) that a death here or ther has gone unawarded.

There's seems to be a pattern emerging - the winner way out on front with between 1600-1700 and then the rest of the good teams at 900-1300. Congrats (??) to Bibliogryphon for breaking the previous low score record of 275 held by TUM in some style with a 114. The high score remains held by Rotten Ali in 2015 with 1762. These don't factor in 2016 scores, as I highly doubt that high scores been breached yet.

EDIT: The above pattern rambling is of completely nonsense, as Luise Rainers 30th December death was never added to the 2014 final scoreboard. That's now been rectified. A late December death still appears crucial

OMG what a surprise! I am usually resigned to mid-table obscurity in deadpool games, so this is quite exciting.

I've made a habit of submitting roughly the same team to the Hare's Death Pool and MPFC's Deathrace on the basis that while one can be fairly confident with some of your picks, you never can be certain when they are going to fall off the perch.. On this occasion only one of my extra five obliged.

Fascinating as always, and thanks to Deathray for running the game.

Following the fine tradition of other dead pools I'm able to offer a prize of £5 in amazon vouchers or donate £5 to a good cause on your behalf, the offer also extends to RA for last year giving no prize was provided for the first year - in the name of fairness and all that.

Nicely done to Toast. I'm pleased to see I still managed third (largely in thanks to Maureen and Marjorie) what with all the early departures my team suffered. Most notably picking Little Jimmy Dickens when he was still just a random ninety something and not yet known to be critically ill

Was looking at my 2015 picks and noticed

http://www.salisburyjournal.co.uk/news/11873647.JAILED__Paedophile_former_mayor_may_die_in_prison/

Paedo Mayor Tim Price died in March

Sorry mate, the article claims he may die in prison. Unless you can link to an article that categorically states he actually died in prison - rather than still breathing with the opportunity he may later stop breathing, I can't award any points. My online hunt has found no such article.

Very decent of you. Thanks. Rather than donate £5 to charity, please, when passing street musicians and you have coins in your pocket, chuck at least one coin, every time, keeping a mental note of the running total till that £5 is gone.

The returning "thank you" remarks are all yours.

Thank you, Deathray. If there is a Blue Cross or Dogs' Trust shop or centre near you, that would be my choice.

If not convenient, then I leave the choice to you.

Just a note. The rules have been amended there's no great shake-up here. Just clarifications on rules as they would have been enforced anyway, as I noticed a shit-tonne of ambiguity in them. Main changes regard some miscalculations on wildcard deaths (364 points would be scored on a 31st December death, previously rules had assumed 365), an extension of the official deadline to 2359 on 31st December and the codification of the leniency shown in past years and examples of qualifying celebrities and illegible famous for dying types. Lastly of these minor changes, the game now automatically opens on the 1st December at 0001 - please don't be a C.U.N.T and submit teams in June/July/August as they won't be accepted.

The biggie for all players is that liability for checking whether a player is breathing at 0000 on January 1st lies with the player, not the game runner. This follows the precedent set by the Prince Bernhard situation last year, whereby the team was left to run with 24 names rather than 25 once the issue was spotted far too late to do anything about it. As no-one raised objections at the time I should hope this change is welcomed.

Inconsequentially all references to specific years (2013/14 namely) have been removed so that the rules can be used in all future competitions and all reference to I have been replaced with the game runner, so that should I fall of a cliff or get banned from DL again another person may voluntarily take over the game and there's no petty squabbles.

Champions have also been added to the OP, along with links to Teams and Scoreboards for existing years.

Finally - for those too lazy to click to page 1, here - in spoiler tags for mine and your sanity - are the new write-ups of the rules and scoring system. Any objections/concerns/gripes/heaps of praise should be raised as soon as possible, not at the end of the year when you realise it might affect your points total (which it shouldn't as there is in my opinion nothing here that would actually affect points totals).

The Rules

  • All picks must be humans aged over 18 on January 1st of the game year..
  • Death row prisoners only score if they die of other causes, those still on trial will still score points if sentenced to execution after 0000 on January 1st.
  • Celebrities qualify if they achieve an obituary or article about their death in a local, national or even specialist newspaper. or website/magazine/paper - the article does not need to specifically relate to their death, instead just mention it and date it. If in doubt cite your death note for approval. There is absolutely no requirement for obits to be in the English language, however translations should be provided if they are not.
  • Entries must be posted between 0001 on the 1st December and 2359 on December 31st, if a pick dies before 2359 but it's not known until January 1st they may be replaced until 2359 on January 1st provided the replacement hasn't died between 0000 and their addition to the team on January 1st. The game runner is permitted to enter should they so choose, with the express understanding that their own team is public before entries open.
  • The game runner is permitted to permit a team submitted within the first few days of January at their own discretion, under the proviso no other teams have scored upon the late teams entry.
  • The exception to this is if the late team includes someone sentenced to death between 0000 on the 1st January and it's submission, in that instance the player will be kindly told to fuck off and have the entire team rejected, ditto for replacements.
  • Murdering your chosen "celebrities" is both against the rules and illegal regardless of willing participation.
  • Keeping alive another persons pick against the picks will to benefit in this game is also against the roles.
  • If assisted euthanasia becomes legal in the future, contestants in this dead pool are forbidden from encouraging/discouraging/or actively taking part in their or another contestants picks decision regarding this or being an active participant in their euthanasia. This rules apply to assisted euthanasia in other countries of picks.
  • Celebrities are disqualified if they are a celebrity because of their impending death. For clarification Tom Attwater - fundraiser dying of cancer was an eligible pick for hia fundraising. This man who became critically ill after being hit by a trolley in M&S would not be an eligible pick if his identity were known for a game held in 2013, if the man were to recover, his extremely dubious claim to fame as the man hit by a trolley in M&S would be sufficient to see him eligible as a pick if he garnered the required obit.
  • All entries must be posted in this thread or PMed to me, they'll then be posted in this thread as one post for each game year.
  • The onus is always on the player to check that the person in question is alive at the start of the competition and replace them within the 24 hour leeway allotted, if this is not something you are willing to do please provide up to 5 substitutes. Even if you're convinced all you're players are breathing you may wish to provide substitutes just to be safe (a player who shall remain nameless provided a pick who died in 2005 in their team, we are all capable of making mistakes - better safe than sorry)

Scoring System

1 Point for each day of the year that passes before your celebs death (if they die on the 10th of January you are awarded 9 points for example) up until the games close at midnight on the 31st December.
250 point bonus if one of your "celebrities" dies on 31st December in that game year (i.e a 31st death will score 614 points in a normal year or 615 points in a leap year rather than the 363 deaths it would normally accrue)
Pick 1 of your celebrities as a wild card to double the points for that pick upon their death. (i.e if they die on the 9th January you'll get 16 points). Wildcards are calculated before the 250 point bonus, meaning are 31st December wildcard will score 976 points not 1228.
500 point bonus if your entire list perish of this mortal coil in 2014.
