The Dead Cow 620 Posted August 11, 2014 Pratchett said n the documentary on assisted dying that the point in which he would no longer wish to live would be when he could no longer write-and when he is now cancelling public appearances surely that is a sign that that point is near? Hmm not sure about James mainly because his cancer is in remission (as far as I know) and although his emphysema is bad he can still talk eloquently without a rattling noise in the back of his throat (it just sounds like he has a bad cold)!I`m not convinced he will go this year but I think definitely in the next year or two. He stopped doing signing sessions a couple of years ago but he is still writing to the best of my knowledge. He has a short story collections coming out this Autumn. Was there a specific event he pulled out of? It was the Discworld Convention which he pulled out of, however his PA announced that Terry was working on a new Discworld novel. So I still think he's got at least a year or two.

Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted August 13, 2014 Extrapolating the trend upto this point will potentially give up 11 deaths for the full year. So my five are ZZG, Havalange, Simon, Rainer & Graham.
Book 3,556 Posted August 13, 2014 Extrapolating the trend upto this point will potentially give up 11 deaths for the full year. So my five are ZZG, Havalange, Simon, Rainer & Graham. Ok then, I will go with: Luise Rainer, Helmut Schmidt, Olivia de Havilland, Sam Simon and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
CaptainChorizo 1,977 Posted August 13, 2014 I think a half dozen or so more could go. Rainer,Whitlam,Graham and Simon at the least I think won't make it out of the year.
Sean 6,315 Posted August 13, 2014 I reckon we will lose twelve more and smash the previous record making a total of 18 with Sam Simon, Billy Graham,Zsa Zsa Gabor,Joao Havelange, Luise Rainer, Gough Whitlam, Chris Woodhead, Terry Pratchett, Joost Van Der Westhuizen, Peter Sallis, Fidel Castro and Denis Norden. That sounds overly optimistic I know but I think it is certainly a realistic possibility. Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted September 3, 2014 I was away when Richard Attenborough died and I was convinced that he was on the list. I think this should go alongside Tony Benn and The General as the three big misses of the year but in my opinion I had Lauren Bacall down as a survivor so that is one i didn't expect to go in 2014. I take it that unlike the Bank of England Monetary Policy committee the Deathlist committee do not publish their minutes so the public can scrutinize the decision making and voting. Eh, Benn, who cares. One of the worst ones no-one really mentions is actually Fred Phelps, he should have been on. That was a shame - Windsor actually suggested him, maybe I should have too. Galento 24 Posted September 3, 2014 I think we will finish the year with another 8 going, making 14/50. My 8 are, as they say, in no particular order, Simon, Rainer, de Havilland,Clive James, van der Westhuizen, Sallis, Asner and Whitlam. Thought about a James double-up, but went for Clive rather than P.D.
Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted September 15, 2014 So Paisley comes as a surprise as none of the recent posts suggested him in their calculations for the finishing positions. We have now equalled the total for 2011 (worst recent year) but we are two deaths ahead of where 2011 was at this point. We are currently only one death behind 2013 at this point but bumper year 2003 the last death occurred on 28th September. I think we will make double figures at least. Death Impends 7,964 Posted September 15, 2014 With 13 living picks that are at least 95 along with a few others like Simon and Sallis that are very poorly I think the 10-12 ballpark is easily within reach.

Sean 6,315 Posted September 16, 2014 This year is a bit like one of those penny machine`s at the arcade-there are a lot dangling over the edge but not many falling down ! Von arsehole must be passing around Zsa Zsa`s wooden leg as a lucky charm to the rest of the list!I still would put money on at least Simon Graham and Havelange going this year !!
Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted September 24, 2014 Looking at the list there are only seven names that I would stick my neck out and say WILL survive the year. That gives us 36 potential green bottles. Dick van Dyck Tony Bennett Valerie Harper Ed Asner Terry Pratchett Shaw Taylor Charles Aznavour I thought about adding Stan Lee then decided against it. (p.s. you also forgot to include Wilko, and Denis Norden is probably stickin around too)

However if it gets to New Years Eve and he is still with it you may raise your glass to the stars and say "Bibliogryphon was right about Ed Asner though"

If I was thinkin about mid-day conversations I had back in September on New Years Eve that would be a somewhat shit NYE. No offence. Not likely to give enough of a shit about him anyway. Although I did recently see him while re-watching a 90s action movie that wasn't nearly as enjoyable when you watch it a second time. Also I don't raise glasses to anybody, might spill some. And it looks stupid holding a big glass of Guinness in the air.
Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted October 9, 2014 It has gone quiet again. We are now over 2/3 through the year and on a pro rata basis we are down to 9 for the year. Unless we end up with a December like last year.
