Anyone else excited for the State Opening of Parliament?

Carriages, the Monarch arriving for some cosplay dress up, Black Rod marching between Houses and thrusting onto the door of the Commons, The King's Speech (unfortunately not the movie)...

The choreography, the lights, the cameras...Ru Paul's Drag Race ain't got nothing on this, baby.

At least JR-M no longer being an MP means the others in parliament don't have to put up with him being aroused by this event.

I'm gutted I'm going to have to miss it, but the time is already allocated to polishing the front door knocker, sorting out the cutlery drawer and if there's any time left over, descaling the kettle. The timing of this event couldn't be worse.

Gawd almighty, those shots of Labour ministers, proving that they can do "smug" just as well as the Tories. You can almost see them thinking "Go on, I am making the King say my policy!".

All except Yvette Cooper, who looked like she had some State sponsored murder to commit, and wishing Chuck III would hurry up.

Where's the humility? The public service they promised should be writ on their faces, not "power at last".

Ah, well, sure there will plenty of time to kick them about.

Right…what sort of faces could they have pulled that you wouldn’t have had a problem with?

Nah, If I was in that position I'd be as smug as fuck throughout, I think the occasion demands it.

Humble the rest of the time, granted.

One thing I'm concerned about.

This Great British Railways thing. I'm not sure what they mean. Here in Scotland we have an independent and iirc publicly owned railway. This has allowed Scotland to negotiate pay and conditions and has lessened the impact of rail strikes, unlike England.

Are they suggesting that they wrest control of Scottish railways back to Westminster? Leaving Scots vulnerable to the unions down south, strikes, inadequate services etc? (More than normal of course!).

I'm intrigued, but also concerned at this possible power grab.

It's to do with the licences for private railway companies expiring. That won't be relevant to already public entities. (Though if they want to push the price down of public transport feel free, I say.)

Keep in mind a fair few sensible things in the manifesto already apply to Scotland (and iirc Wales) but Newcastle, Norwich and Toast Land didn't have devolution over the last fourteen years.

I'm not sure how the energy company is going to work though imo it's in everyone's interest (including financially) to maximise the fuck out of the Scottish renewables set up.

Yeah, on the railways we know England has been failing here.

But making it "Great British" Railways though? This suggests Scotrail will end and Westminster will take control, no? It all seems to be dragging Scotland down to England's level. I may be wrong, but if the Scottish Parliament ceases to have effective control of something they nationalised (a) will Scotland be compensated for the cost, and (b) how will disputes in England adversely affect Scotland? This seems on the face of it to be contrary to their idea of devolution - no wait, that only applies to England.

If Scotrail continues as an entity with Scottish control, I'm less inclined to care how they fix the mess down south.

Still no benefit in my opinion one way or the other to Scotland re energy. Still a reserved matter, Scotland still produces a lot of energy for the UK yet we have some of the highest bills in the country - we are colder and need to light up earlier. We are paid less for our generation and charged disproportionately more. And still rUK takes the credit for net zero ambitions by relying heavily on Scotland leading the way on renewables. I'm ambivalent as to whether they are addressing the issues here - but hey, they got our votes, so as per usual, they can flounce off to the Palace of Westminster and forget about us.

Who knows? Intrigued to see how much they deliver here.

I’m sure it was said during the election that Great British Energy is going have its head office in Scotland so it will presumably be focused on it.

There are some people I am genuinely fearful for, naive and clearly not psychologically sound enough to be given Trump's hot air (I'll get my coat) and the right to vote and not put two and two together to get fifty-seven point six, but Marjorie Taylor Greene is not one of them. She has proven time and time again that any pity is wasted on her and she needs to be removed from power before she causes any more damage. Vile woman.

Baroness Hallett ripping the Tory Government a new arsehole over its preparedness and dealing with the COVID pandemic.

There's not enough money for the services we already have, taxes aren't going up because that wouldn't have got enough votes, borrowing is already at 97% of GDP, spending is ringfenced on several areas (not unreasonably) but justice isn't one of them, so if the totally unreliable 'growth' doesn't happen it'll probably get cut further.

The jails are full the entire world is heading over a climate precipice which will eventually make every other issue irrelevant- so what do we do with 5 peaceful climate protestors (even if annoying in their choice of targets)?

Yeah, send them to jail for 4 or 5 years.

It must make sense to someone. But that someone isn't me.

A British Prime Minister speaking eloquently in defence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. How refreshing. So reassuring.

Emily Maitlis 'needs her head examined' and further, is 'a sad case of a human being' it would seem.

At least according to Kari Lake, republican candidate in Arizona senate 2024, former gubernatorial candidate for Arizona 2022, former news anchor...

Only a couple of minutes and a good laugh.

Maitlis is the best in the business, no question.

Another quite funny exchange with Nigel Führage here too, questioning him on why the fuck he's in the US.
