Conservative party leadership hopefuls pulling out all the stops. Jenrick  and Badenoch fighting over the far right vote whilst Cleaverly and Tugenhadt are trying to be more centerist. Tugenhadt has come across quite unpleasant but he could just realise that he needs to appeal more to the right of the party to get his name on the ballot of the final two that goes to the party membership.

At this time I hate to say it but Cleaverly seems like the best option at the moment*

*I hate the Conservative party and what it stands for but out two party system needs strong opposition to hold the Government to account and not just regurgitate populist rhetoric

Accidently I'm sure

My reaction to this, after thinking 'how convenient', was why is the BBC interviewing Boris Johnson? Can only be a puff-piece to promote his book, surely!

I’m amazed Starmer has been stupid enough to hand back the Chagos islands.

Ok, I'll bite because I'm at a loose end for 10 minutes.

Why is it stupid?

*And no answers that suggest I'm equally stupid for responding to this, I already know that thanks.

Because it’s an massive own goal to allow everyone to call them unpatriotic during a period of declining unpopularity

The negotiations that brought about Thursday's deal began years before Sir Keir Starmer became prime minister.

A backlash from some voices in the UK can be expected, even though successive Conservative and Labour prime ministers have both been working towards the same broad goal.

Deal would have been practically done before the election.

The Farage Reform types will be the only ones who'll kick up about this.

Tory Front Bench and Reform types practically the same thing nowadays and again these neogtiations were taking place under the previous Tory Govt. Enough with the hysterics. A deal like this couldn't have been done in 3 months partiucalry given there would have to be input from the US.

This is a double negative, it doesn't mean what you think it does.

You're Opinion Stated As Fact(ing) again. Somewhat ameliorated by the fact that at least this is titled a 'ranting' thread.

On a more general note, if anyone wants a discussion for a laugh, why do we as a nation believe that because we occupied a load of far away islands by force a couple of centuries ago we should still be administering them in the 21st century?  How would we feel if Argentina administered Jersey? or The isle of Man (sorry @Handrejka) or The Orkneys?

I personally find it hard to see what business it is of ours in the middle of the Indian Ocean as of today.

National security. It’s an important military base for the west.

Plus it’s the principle as now people will assume he will give the Falklands to Argentina or Gibraltar to the Spain.

Tories can’t believe their luck with this.

Anything despised by three Tory leadership contenders and Grant Shapps is a good move imo.

Anyway, with Ukraine, Israel and a forthcoming Budget, I and many many others I am sure could not give a stuff about the Chagos. Just my opinion though.

We should send the Elgin marbles back too whist we're at it.

Or actually, thinking about it, just invade Mauritius and make a bigger military base for the west and keeping the existing one killing two birds with one stone (three if you count government popularity since that seems your main premise here).

I'm serious about one of those, I'll let you guess which.

I thought you were opposed to the Winter fuel cuts. The Tories have decided to despise those as well.

I'm not entirely against the Winter Fuel Payments being means tested - perhaps the Government have gone too far in the cut off or having a taper. I've never seen the need for wealthy folk to be given Government handouts.

I think the worst is yet to come. Which I will complain about at length, no doubt.

Meantime, I shall return to my hearth until something worth moaning about comes along. ;)

Mauritius is a cool country and we should have been more diplomatic with them over this years ago. Too many shitheads out there to keep agro with a friendly country. My opinion.

The only time I’ve met someone from those islands was the builders who did up my family’s house. They were a Mauritian heritage family.
