Sir Creep

Biggest 'miss(es)' by the DL Committee 2016

Recommended Posts

PM Davies and Howards Marks right now looking like the only obvious misses as both meet fame/notability level threshold and were thought by most not likely to see the year out .

The rest of the deaths were either borderline fame level or not really famous enough for DL or people who didn't have any severe health issues.

The only true misses for deathlist IMO were maxwell davies and marks, as CC said, Harper Lee cause she was on deathlist before, and John Glenn, cause he was 95 years old and famous enough (would've been better than Lester Piggott for example).

My view

NOT A MISS (as people can’t generally see into the future)

  • David Bowie
  • Alan Rickman
  • Terry Wogan
  • Antonin Scalia
  • Emerson, Lake or the rest of the music alumni
  • Ronnie Corbett
  • Michael Cimino
All of whom would have made the list if they'd been public about their health, imo. (Well, apart from the obvious heart attack and suicide in there)

NOT A MISS (as not really Deathlisty)

  • Pat Harrington Jr and other old American actors
  • George Gaynes
  • Douglas Slocombe
  • Rob Ford
  • Gordie Howe
  • Goran Hadzic
  • Peter Esterhazy
  • and so on...
ARGUABLE

  • Umberto Eco (but writers rarely appear on the Deathlist, as I’ve bemoaned before)
  • George Martin
  • Peter Maxwell Davies
  • Johan Cruyff (though most people on here thought he’d be OK)
  • Howard Marks (though again, many people on here thought he was on for 2017)
  • Gene Wilder
  • Arnold Palmer
  • Shimon Peres
  • Robert Vaughan
  • Peter Vaughan
  • John Glenn
Could have been Deathlisty names, but weren't. It happens.

AN ACTUAL BONAFIDE MISS

  • Harper Lee (Dropped from the 2015 list)

WTF is Deathlisty? British? MTM destroys that argument. What's your definition then?

Pat Harrington is an awful unmitigated miss - period. A comedic star, terribly recignizabke internationally, and on death's doorstep. But maybe once I see your definition it'll make more sense to me.

Deathlisty is expected to be covered by the UK media. And they have to be BBC friendly names. MTM falls into that category. Harrington, not so much.

SC, Harrington.

I wouldn't recignizabke him from a packet of oatmeal.

No chance of DL material.

Wogan is the only arguable one, as it looked like he was going out.

Johan, less so.

Ack, it's hard to explain, but over time you know a Deathlist candidate name when you see one, basically. And the opposite.

Yes, this sums it up. Although there is the occasional exception.

Even though I'm a Yank I tend to get a good idea of who's DLy or not simply by how the British members on here talk about them. So if someone gets a ton of "damn, they're ill?" comments and a plethora of wisecracks (not to mention if say, BBC covers their malady) I can tell they're clearly someone known in the UK. Whereas someone like Harrington only really got "I hope he can hang on until January 1" comments when he was first mentioned on here.

If you want to help just draw up a list of people that are dying, about to die, will probably die or have a better than average chance of snuffing it within the next 6 months.

They will look at the lists and pick from there, will take them the usual 5 mins and then their work is done for another 12 months.

It couldn't have escaped peoples attention that the 'committee' have about as much interest in picking the 50 and participating in all the fun of the forum as Cliff Richard has in women.

I was thinking more the exasperated sound a parent makes before trying to explain why it's a bad idea to play with the electricals or something. Though technically that's more of a "Hmmm-gnarr" sound which doesn't translate on paper, but anyhow, I digress...

How I always imagined the Deathlist Committee to be honest:

drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink...more drink, drink, drink, drink

With "five minutes" before closing: "Hey, is that Norman Tebbitt still alive?"

(checks Wiki on phone)

"Yeah, he is. Get him on the list. Right, job done."

More drink, drink, drink, drink, drink...

But I suppose that takes the fun out of folk's lists.

I'll see if I can dig out the punting equivalent...
