A list of Lords from The Lord of Lists

The following 20 peers are the oldest of those who have been given extended leave of absence from their duties in the Lords. It is possible that such leave is granted for other reasons such as holding a UN or EU political appointed post but considering the youngest of these will be 87 this year I imagine most of them are ill or frail, and remember there are many older people than this still active in the Upper House.

  • Michael Sandberg (b.1927)
  • John (J D) Sainsbury (b.1927)
  • Gwilym prys Prys-Davies (b.1923)
  • Jim Prior (b.1927)
  • Beryl Platt (b.1923)
  • Olive Nicol (b.1923)
  • James Molyneaux (b.1920)
  • Roy Mason (b.1924)
  • George Mackie (b.1919)
  • Betty Lockwood (b.1924)
  • Philip Knights (b.1920)
  • William Griffiths (b.1923)
  • Robert Goff (b.1926)
  • Robert Lindsay (b.1927)
  • Alun Gwynne-Jones (b.1919)
  • Asa Briggs (b.1921)
  • Thomas Bridges (b.1927)
  • Derek Barber (b.1918)
  • Ian Paisley (b.1926)
  • Richard Attenborough (b.1923)
There should be an obit for any of these.

Third hit from this list from last August with Beryl Platt dying.

you missed out Philip Knights who died in December. you must keep up ! :smileyd:

Thank you - whoever you are. I struggle to pay attention during the festive season.

5 have gone now. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-31513192 Quarter of your list have died in just 6 months 1

Was it Ebola?

Just a bad cold I think.

According to this this article about the treasonous letter sent by 47 US Republican senators, Iranian leader Ali Khamenei (75) is ailing. Could be a major miss for the current top 50. Also debatable is he is clergy or political.

Think he has his own thread. Also think I read somewhere they released pics or a video of him alive and well and receiving dignitaries the very next day. The Castro Mystique Effect I'm calling it.

Indeed, also, the Castro Mystique Effect usually befalls regimes the USA doesn't like (Iran, Cuba, North Korea).

fighting for his l ife after massive heart attack according to twitter .Hope he pulls through. He's one of the few MPs who actually cares about the poor

If by caring you mean using them and their experience as a selling platform for an unworkable system then yes he cares about the poor.

Hmm, so he's not back to campaign and he's sitting in fairly safe Labour territory, there'll be a scramble for that opportunity.

Stop feeding uncomfortable truths to a community full of lefties you like-whore!

(oh wait you're just saying socialism should be replaced with full-on communism but whatever, it vaguely looks like you "admitted" something so I'm happy)

First time a Labour Party spokespiece has ever said Frank Field was responding well to treatment :smileyd:

Socialism as it existed in the Eastern Bloc didn't rely on private financial interests. It relied on "socialist work ethics" and "socialist education". But if someone lacked the ethics and couldn't be brainwashed at school, they could still be charged with "social parasitism" (which was a criminal offence) if they didn't want to get a proper job (like freelancer artists).

So this mixed system advocated by the Western European parties is still better, even if it seems a bit inconsistent.

Socialism didn't exist in the 'eastern bloc'. A system of power pervaded which used a convenient title. Socialism as a philosophy is about making sure everyone has at least the basics needed for existence (food, warmth, shelter) which no one with an interest in humanity would deny.
