Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

Gen. Colin Powell had his funeral service today. Quite a few notable people there and some not.

Neither Carter showed up, nor did Bill Clinton (or the Trumps....but that was obvious).

Madeleine Albright showed up and looked fairly good. Gave a speech.

Neither Henry Kissinger nor James Baker showed up.

His wife, Alma Powell, did not look good at all in a wheelchair. She is 84 years old and I'm not sure how long she'll last.

Link if anyone cares to watch more closely:

Watching it. Some stuff I've noticed:

Dole's former aide, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage did a long speech. Sounds and looks great for a slightly large 76-year old.

Weird thing (to me, atleast) was that Hillary Clinton was there but Bill wasn't as you mentioned.

Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney. That's H.W. Bush's VP Dan Quayle (74) next to them, he looks like he's aged a lot during the last years.

The narrative is that Bill is recovering from his infection + hospital stay. Seems fairly ominous. I don't think he will die anytime soon, but wouldn't be surprised if he goes within the next 5 years. Certainly won't reach Carter longevity.

Cheney looks horrible as well. Didn't notice that first watch through!

Yukhum Zvyahilsky is a very big guy for someone aged 88. Reminds me of Ariel Sharon.

Also on the top100 oldest living state leaders since Catherine Tizard died on Sunday.

That was a short stay in the top 100! Rest in Peace you giant guy and according to some the "Mastermind behind the Ukrainian kleptocracy"

The newcomer in the top 100 (if the ones with an unclear DoB or status as leaders are excluded) is Mark Eyskens, Prime Minister of Belgium briefly in 1981 and the last living Prime Minister who served during the 42-year rule of King Baudouin (1930-1993), the elder brother of King Albert II.

Eyskens was born on the 29th of April 1933, same day as Willie Nelson. Seems to be strong both physically and mentally.

Guillermo "Bombita" Rodriguez Lara, military dictator of Ecuador 1972-1976 recently celebrated his 97th birthday. The good die young...

He came to power in 1972 after ousting José María Velasco Ibarra (1893-1979) and was removed from power by a military junta of Vice Admiral Alfredo Poveda (1926-1990), General Guillermo Durán Arcentales (1925-1985) and Luis Leoro Franco (1925-dead?)

Joined by family members. Apparently wants to listen Madonna's Don't Cry For Me Argentina over and over again.

A goodbye message or does he just like the song? Might be both.

Death Notice for Sir John Butterfill, former Tory MP for Bournemouth West (1983-2010), aged 80: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/253421/butterfill-sir-john-valentine

Former PPS to Cecil Parkinson. Caught up in expenses scandal for designating a house he bought as his main home and doing it up, despite owning a six bedroom house in Surrey, and that big old property was what he claimed second homes allowances on, including for staff quarters. Also verged on, but ultimately decided didn't, that in return for supporting Cameron as PM, he would get elevated to the House of Lords was not a breach of Parliamentary Standards.

Also wanted the UK to abandon GMT to save the clocks going back and forward. Obviously because that only affected the Scots.

Imo, another selfish cunt using his position to benefit himself, you decide your own position.

Full Telegraph obit.

Also worth noting that Butterfill's death means there are no living former MPs for either of the Bournemouth constituencies.

An off radar death (not that he would ever obit)...

Eddy Morrison (wiki), a veteran far right/neo-Nazi activist in Britain, died in June aged 70 following a fall. A leading figure within the National Front and closely aligned with John Tyndall.

Which reminds me...

Former National Front leader Tom Holmes (wiki) is still alive, and will turn 90 next year, and according to some chit chat online was in a care home as of 2019... now he COULD obit, but it's a risk.

Edit: John Bean (wiki) also worth a mention. 94 next year. Obit chances minimal though.

John Bean mentioned here dead aged 94.

Somkiat Pongpaiboon has died again.

Thai websites saying that the stroke he had last month made him braindead but he "lived" on for a while on life support. Not really that notable as the English wikipedia never reverted the first death date (17th of October) until today
