Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

Last MP elected in the 1945, 1950 and 1951 Parliaments.

Three oldest surviving MPs are now: Ronald Atkins (Labour, b. 1916), Lord Denis Healey (Labour, b. 1917) and Sir Albert McQuarrie (Conservative, b. 1918).

From the 1955 Parliament, there are 8 individuals still living:

Sir Richard Body (b. 1927) Conservative

Sir Robin Chichester-Clark (b. 1928) Ulster Unionist Party

Lord John Eden (b. 1925) Conservative

Lord Denis Healey (b. 1917) Labour

Lord Robert Lindsay (b. 1927) Conservative

Lord Roy Mason (b. 1924) Labour

Tom Mitchell (b. 1931) Sinn Féin

James Ramsden (b. 1923) Conservative

Survivors for later Parliaments:

1959: 19 / 629

1964: 49 / 630

1966: 83 / 630

And then too many to count from the latter ones...

Sir Albert McQuarrie is still alive? I'll have to stick him on one of my lists as he was the last Conservative MP for my constituency before Alex Salmond took it from him in 1987.

A friend of mine saw him at a Better Together event shortly before the indy ref. Said he was wobbly on the knees (with a zimmer frame to aid walking) but mentally fit as a fiddle.

Article and photo of him here from earlier this year: http://www.ellontimes.co.uk/news/local-headlines/buchan-bulldog-publishes-memoirs-1-3257251

Former Father of the House Alan Williams dead at 84.

This leaves only Tam Dalyell as a former Father of the House but Sir Peter Tapsell (the current incumbent) will step down in 2015.

Who would that leave as the Father of the House in the new parliament, Ken Clarke?

Currently it'd be a four way tie - Clarke, Dennis Skinner, Michael Meacher and Gerald Kaufman, all of whom are planning to stand next year and highly unlikely to lose their seats.

Of course, Clarke's the youngest there.

EDIT - Bloody ninja'd trying to work out who I'd forgotten! Damn you, Michael Meacher!

Longest-serving Congress member in US history, John Dingell, in hospital as a precuationary measure:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/john-dingell-hospitalized-precaution

I grew up in Michigan where Dingle came from. Soon after he went to hospital for this precautionary thingy, he broke his hip and his ass is parked in said hospital. He's old and frail. He's not quite a lock but a broken hip is the death knell ( my mother had one a month ago so I'm preparing). Put Dingle I your 2015 list!!!

Another for 2016 is former Gov of Montana Judy Martz. Pancreatic cancer diagnosed summer 2014. She just went under knife to have that procedure do e they take out gall bladder and pancreas. The chemo. She's 71. The average lifespan after chemo if all goes wrong (a recurran e) is 18-24 months. So keep a eye on her progress. The slightest bad news and she's a goner 2016. She was also an Olympic speed skater for USA so should obit.

Guardian has this piece on the only elected Communist (by party name anyway) in Britain........ some council fucker up in Scotland. 78 or about that (found it in another article).

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/11/-sp-britains-last-elected-communist-councillor-willie-clarke

Any idea what's going on with his face? Doesn't look worth posting on the main thread but provides plenty of amusement here I think.

Also, I found this while I was poking around in Socialist Worker (yeah sorry I do look at some sordid shit sometimes). Is this a joke or what? It's dated September 2013 not April 1........ (btw allow me to complete your article for you, you lumber-fingered twats......) "....force."

Rebecca 'Becky' D. Lockhart, first female Speaker of the House in Utah, hospitalized with currently unknown 'aggressive' disease. Don't sound like she's going to give us the decency of using her name in 2016.

After the death of Billie Whitelaw I've decided to tip Roy Hattersley as one of the next 1932-born-person(s) who never seems to have any particular illness or cancer, but just suddenly keels over one day.
