Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 6, 2022 On 06/01/2020 at 17:56, Joey Russ said: So, I was a bit bored, and was trying to think of ideas. Then something popped into my head. Why not make a list of names that were picked by the winning team of each year. Doesn’t matter if they died that year, lived, didn’t get a QO, or (in one case) die before ddp action but wasn’t known until afterwards. As long as they appear on the winning team as mentioned on the ddp site (so no Mark Crispin, for example), they’re fine. So the list goes as follows... 1. John Andretti 2. Frankie Banali Kidding. You mean, I can’t have a little bit of fun every now and then? There usually is the odd "blimey" pick you'd assume would have got on their list before if they were going to (Giscard d'estaing, Rockefeller, Rainer), but I guess from 1930 and earlier, you can limit the Deathlist likely candidates to: 1916 –Beverly Cleary 1917 - IM Pei, Diana Athill 1919 – James Lovelock, Sheila Mercier 1920 – John Paul Stevens 1921 – Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, Carol Channing 1922 –Lyndon LaRouche, Dilip Kumar, Ivor Broadis 1923 –Glynis Johns, Franco Zeffirelli, Gen. Just noticed four years have passed since this post. Over half of these names have gone in that time, and 16 have actually made it on the DL. Glynis Johns continually being ignored by the Cmme does surprise, as a big name actress who happens to have been in one of the biggest films of all time. Some of the others frankly died too soon. Roger Bannister for example I was sure would be a DL regular but he was dead within a month of that post of the flu. In the post Bill Gates Sr world the ceiling for Deathlist picks is considerably lower too. Still, not a bad batting average.
arghton 6,735 Posted March 11, 2022 I'm a bit sad that Dilip never made it to the list. He pretty much spent the most of his last three years (when he wasn't hospitalised with pneumonia, pleural effusion or anything) surrounded by a medical team in a mini ICU with every health issue known (including advanced cancer) and was also a major name in India, I wonder if Amitabh Bachchan or Asha Bhosle will ever end up on the list, we'll see James Watson has looked like a corpse for the last three years or more.

June Whitfield was another name that felt like a lock for DL, but died before she could appear. Out of the names still living, Patricia Routledge is someone I've been expecting to debut for a few years now, though she still seems to be in fairly good health. Far from bad, indeed. I believe most of the 2019-2021 debutants born on that timeframe were on your list.

Last picked for the DDP in 2008 I think! Harrison Birtwistle died 14 years after last being picked on the DDP. Is this a record?
Death Impends 7,975 Posted April 18, 2022 He was picked again later but it wouldn't be a record anyway, Henry Lincoln was picked in 2006 and died this year. Jack Newton could've outdone even that if he didn't return as a pick this year. It was his first year in the DDP since 2003!
Spade_Cooley 9,525 Posted June 12, 2022 Still-living picks from Deathlist Cup finals 2021 Sasha Johnson Shakti Mishra Soulaimane Raissouni MakSim 2020 Derek Draper Ahmed Gohar - assuming this is the Kuwaiti singer/actor, he appears to still be alive but doesn't have the greatest online footprint so idk Asel Kadyrbekova Abdallah Meshref Arthur Neto Abdel Rahim Ali Alex Zanardi 2019 Doug De Roo Gavin Robertson 2018 Tom Crawford - no idea who this was meant to be. The footballer? The mathematician? The theologist? The artist? None of them have easily googleable health issues. Sean Cox Virgil Hunter Alejandro Junco de la Vega Rev Violet Mark - the Lakher Pioneer Mission hasn't mentioned her dying, so I have to assume she's still w/us. 2017 Assuming "Ahraf Rahi" is meant to be "Ashraf Rahi", the Pakistani comedian (who was in ill-health at the time), then everyone from the 2017 final is dead.
msc 18,450 Posted June 12, 2022 Tom Crawford (Longtime journalist, editor (Atlanta Journal), author, founder/editor of The Georgia Report) According to Sir Creep's notes in 2018. A random find tbh as I have nothing on the 2017 final or 2019 final anymore. He died in July 2018, apparently.
