Born in Italy, she studied in Cambridge where she met Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi. He had an early death via suicide bomber, so Sonia then became the de facto head of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty while her two children grew up. She led the Congess Party for almost 20 years and then gave the chairmanship to her son. She had a couple of health problems in the past years, most critically, surgery for cervical cancer in 2011.
