Baby come back by the Equals.?

Eddy Grant had it on his own but not sure if in the 70's. Defo was a minor hit when I was leaving school.

Nope. They were a four-piece 'American' band and the writer is American. The minor hit would be about the time you were starting school.

The Monkees I'm A Believer written by Neil Diamond (which was number one when my wife was born as often quoted by my mother in law).

This UK number one single in the 1960s by a boy band was a minor hit for its very famous singer songwriter in the 1970s. Just in what his fans might be heard to say, is a clue.

I'm A Believer by The Monkees and Neil Diamond ?

You are correct and @charon "you were born to get this right" would have been my next clue.

Mrs GUN born 20 Jan '67

So my go I think.

Top 10 hit for US Group in late '90s. Annoy my family by singing this every time we go to visit one of my sisters.

Nope - there is a reason why I sing this particular song on the way there. The song itself is not annoying it's just I sing it every single time we visit her.

Nope and nope - this song was the group's biggest hit to date from their first album which had an eye catching cover.

If it is, then The Eels were out about then.

Couldn't tell you any of their songs tho.

At a guess "She's a slut" or some such.
