I never saw holby, casualty or the bill as soaps but doctors i do.

How about we go on what has been nominated for an award in the soap category at award shows?

I'm currently compiling a - very long - list of television shows - involving the use of that wiki page and  few other sources - that I'd deem acceptable for this competition. It includes a few shows that many probably see as soaps and a few that might make people go what.... once it's up I'll invite discussion on it and any that might need to be removed to satisfy general deadpooling consensus....

Meanwhile, feel free to debate the merits of certain shows being soaps.

For me it's only a soap if it's on every week, all year round.

Home Front was on every day for over 4 years.....

WW1 day by day, a hundred years on.

That wiki page is fucking useless to all accounts. Doesn't list any of the radio soap operas broadcast in the US that didn't go telly of which there are fuck-tonnes....

Do continuing dramas such as Casualty , Holby et al count as soaps? What about The Bill or Angels?

The Bill raises a serious question of defining a soap opera - for ease "soap opera" status will be granted to any show which ran in soap format for part of it's run. Continuing dramas that would generally be lumped in as soapy will be granted (your Casualty, Holby City's of the world. I'll put a list below, but that list is open to expansion by the general wisdom, as well as narrowing by the general wisdom. It should also serve as useful researching starting point for deadpoolers with better things to do than actually watch soap operas (allegedly)....

In other news i just realised why no-one else had started this deadpool....

Apologies for the bluntness of this reply. Yes! See the post directly above yours....

My team has been submitted. Most of it is fairly obvious as I am not a die-hard soap watcher. Gone for number of hits rather than working through those bonuses.

Thanks @Deathray for running this.

Holby, Casualty, Doctors and the Bill give plentiful of guest appearances.

When submitting a team should we include all their eligible soaps or only their main ones for those who have been regular on one soap but a guest on another.

Whilst it would benefit me in points calculation for you to list all their eligible soaps, I appreciate in some cases this simply isn't practical. There's no obligation to include any of their soaps.

And just to note I've added Casualty 1900s and Baywatch to the above mega-list.

In response to a PM Query I have had from a potential entrant there's a new rule.

Spin Offs -

  • An individual episode spin off will be counted as a part of the main show.
  • A multi-episode spin off series will be counted as a soap opera and therefore eligible.

For clarification this means "Dot's Story" and "Perfectly Frank..." would be counted as episodes of EastEnders.

Whilst "Kat and Alfie: Red Water" and "Damon and Debbie" (Brookside spin off) will be counted as separate soap operas.

Who knew this would be so fucking complicated?

Episodes must have been shown on UK television to qualify, you're obscure direct-to-videos such as "Coronation Street: Out of Africa" can fuck off.

Serves me right for having the brass neck to start a dead-pool with the bolded statement above...

I'll just stick to Eastenders, Corrie and Emmerdale, unless some random obscure soap star comes down with a dose of pancreatic glioblastoma.

Thank you! And can I just check had anyone actually heard of Melrose Place - or the majority of that list above -before googling for cancer ridden soap stars?

Cut down to the ones I've heard of.

Family Affairs is the one that tried to deal with falling ratings by using a bomb to kill ALL the lead characters.

So I thought I'd do an internet recce on a couple of the shows up there I'd never heard of on that list.

One of them was apparently quite big in the UK in the late 90s - Sunset Beach. The entire shows in on YouTube.... I've suffered watched the first episode out of curiousity; so far

Spoilers btw, as if anyone would be daft enough to watch this.

  •  The lead character has abandoned her wedding and hopped on a plane after discovering her boyfriend was two timing her.
  • She's hopped on that plane on the basis of "if you ever want someone to talk to I'm here" which she's interpreted as stalk me and move to my town".
  • He definitely didn't mean move to my town, but her internet connection cuts off when he tells her so.
  • One of the lead characters has been defrauding her dad for months and he's found out by hiring a private investigator to check if she really was at law school.
  • Whilst defrauding her dad she's been holding massive parties, and of course her dad gets to meet the cop she "had" round the night before whilst bollocking her.
  • She chooses to seek the advise of a nymphomaniac aunt on this matter, who is about as much as use as a chocolate fireplace.
  • A load of nonsense clap-trap about whoever you meet on the beach at sun-down is who they're destined to spend their life with based on the guy who first owned the beach and his misses.
  • An insufferable git got promoted, and his wife's first thought now she's not his working partner is "he might have an affair"
  • A street kid just gets gifted a house by a kind stranger to squat in with no explanation of where the keys from (kind stranger doesn't own the house).
  • The lead character's had her bag stolen and then whilst trying to get it back endings up falling off the pier into the river in a dramatic fashion..
  • The lifeguards attempt to rescue her by diving off the very top of the life tower into water (surely high enough for the "feels like concrete? to kick in"
  • Nobody can act, there place in the show seemingly being decided on how good they look in a pair of beach shorts or a bikini.
  • The dialogue consists of almost exclusively "do something" and "snipey one liners" that fall flat....

We're 45 minutes in. And people say the UK soaps are sensationalist? Like, seriously who was the target audience for this?

Apparently there was one in the UK anyway because Channel 5 tried to save the show when it got cancelled, it was rating that well?

This show ran for 755 episodes. and worryingly i'm kind of intrigued to see what nonsense exactly they fill them with.. Even El Dorado seemed to have more thought behind it (although poorer and end result) than this.

Apparently half the cast of Corrie at the time loved it as well.

You do know there’s a spoiler tag so people who don’t want to see spoilers can just scroll by the spoilers without being spoiled, right?

Yeah, but Deathray's the only person to have watched it in the last 10 years.

For me it's only a soap if it's on every week, all year round.

That would exclude the gems that are Latin American telenovelas such as Maria La del Barrio....

And the context your inevitably seeking:
