John Hawken, keyboardist with The Nashville Teens and The Strawbs, reportedly dead: https://dmme.net/john-hawken-passed-away/

Whilst doing a general update tonight, I discovered that Barry Jenkins (wiki) drummer with The Nashville Teens and then later The Animals, died in January aged 79, but it go no attention beyond a family death notice!

Maurice Williams reportedly dead aged 84:

I believe a pick for @Death Impends on the DDP in 2022, whether he survived a cull is for them.

Edit: Checked and still a pick for the DDP.

Imagine writing a 96-second song when you’re 15 that basically funds the rest of your life (assuming he got his royalties paid). RIP Maurice (unless you’re only hoax-dead)

With Maurice Williams and Eric Carmen gone in the same year, it makes you wonder are there any more hits coming from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

Yeah, picks on my music team are going to stay (heh) unless they die, or become popular enough a DDP pick I can risk leaving them off entirely. Like I dropped Duke Fakir due to being on enough other teams and still wrote his obit, so gambled right there.

When waking up this morning Stay was one of the first things the 60s radio played. And no reference to his death so it were coincidence. :rip:

Thanks YW. I find it hard to believe that Maurice Williams and Henry Gaston are the only members of The Zodiacs who have died.

Hopefully more will turn up on the others in time.

Interestingly Soul Tracks say he was 86 (born 1938), as opposed to that earlier tweet that said he was 84 (1940 was his most commonly given birth year). Henry Gaston, who died in 2015, was born in 1935, so 1938 would make more sense.

If it was 1940 he’d have written Stay aged 13, which would be quite precocious.

But so is writing it at 15, Mr. Schofield ^_^

Yes, but at 13 I was watching Grease and getting my first radio-tape player. Two years later I was listening to the Jam, had a guitar and was working out rudimentary chords and trying to turn them into songs. Everything speeds up in the teens… I seem to remember.

I’m not surprised he’s conked out, since he did it every night, every day, and every possible way.

A commitment that was likely tested when she died in 1979, given the lack of a follow up song I'm presuming he drew the line at the possibilities that presented themselves from that point.

Russ was punching above his weight there, sporting the Lennie Peters-meets-Hank Marvin-in-Graeme’s Garden look. Herb Fame had fewer qualms, recruiting a new Peaches each time the previous one became overripe.

NB: I think Capehart was older than most members as there are suggestions online that he was recording as early as 1943. There’s an Arthur Capehart on Ancestry (1920–1998). Could be him but I’d need something to link this to.

Updated the above two entries.

Letty Jo Randell from The Sex-O-Lettes died back in October 2023, aged 89.
Darryl Grant, lead vocalist with Fat Larry's Band, died back in November 2023, aged 76.

Given that "Get Dancin'" by the former and "Zoom" by the latter are massive hits I'm surprised neither got press coverage.

Yeah, Zoom made #2 in the UK in 1982, should be on the list of Fat Larry's hits
