Meat Loaf provided pre-game entertainment at today's AFL (Australian football) grand final and although I missed it, it was, apparently, absolutely atrocious in a worst-performance-of-all-time kind of way:

Probably not his greatest moment, but then again, surely the audience had gone to watch a football game (or whatever).

Indeed. It is cool to see that message from Karla de Vito herself on the video comment. :-)

I'm just thankful he didn't collapse on stage, I consider it a "win" whenever that doesn't happen - by this stage in the game it's all we can hope for. :D

By the way, the previous holder of the "Worst Pre-Grand Final Performance" title was Angry Anderson for riding around in a mock Batmobile yelling his unbelievably trashy dirge, "Bound for Glory":

Another bloody awful Loaf performance from earlier this year can be found here:

so the AFL Grand Final wasn't just a one-off disaster. Given the way he is slurring his words, do you think he is drunk or stoned?

Yes.

Hein

The Loaf Strikes Back:

US rocker Meat Loaf says the AFL are jerks, and he has vowed to convince other artists not to perform at the grand final.

The 64-year-old's grand final pre-match performance, as well as his high price tag, were widely criticised in the media.

He was reportedly paid in excess of $500,000, a figure he disputes.

After the performance AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the singer "gave his best" but was disappointing.

But Meat Loaf has blamed the AFL, saying they did not provide a live piano or enough time for a sound check and he could not hear the music in his earpiece.

"I'm sorry, they're jerks. I do not like them," he said of the AFL, according to News Ltd reports.

"And I'll tell you what, anybody that I hear announces that they're going to play for them I'm going to write to that particular artist a letter and tell them not to.

"And I hope the AFL hears this and I want this everywhere. Because I will go out of my way to tell any artist do not play for them."

The rocker said it was impossible to put on a good show in the allocated area.

The AFL declined to comment on Meat Loaf's comments.

A bloke I work with actually attended Loaf's Brisbane concert a few days after the AFL shambles and said it was hilariously bad and lots of people walked out.

Also, Loaf's female accompanist did not seem to have any problems with the limitations with regard to sound checks and live pianos the AFL put in place...

Was on the One show tonight. Didn't look as if there were any health issues, except for him being an athsmatic.

Maybe not, but he has always looked the type that might keel over any minute.

Two days later, he's taken ill and misses his appearance on 'Loose Women'.

Mind you, they make me sick as well.

I know this whole topic is 7 yrs old but isn't it nice y'all now have the answer to your death wish on Meatloaf. He's alive, well, and one of the celebrity apprentices. I enjoyed seeing him on the show and the comercial he did with his son and daughter (boost phone) he's lost all that weight and he looks good. I've always been a fan and do not wish to see him die anytime soon.

Nobody 'wishes' him dead.

I think Jim Steinman did, for a while.

No I think that was just part of Mr Steinman's project to turn all music he is involved with into a bland, lifeless, sameness that just sounds like you died and went to musical hell. A hell where there is no hope of life ever returning to the form, while excitement is in future to be released in carefully controlled amounts that allow for a slow fading into a dead banality of sameness never to be revived . . . . oops . . . sorry got carried away there!

Best regards

Syd

I used to like Jimmy's music when I was a kid but if you try to listen to a series of his albums in sequence (such as the three Bats, Bad for Good and Dead Ringer), it does all start to sound the same fairly quickly. Bat 2 has dated particularly badly now with all of its synths.

Speaking of Jim, though, how is he healthwise these days? I saw him on a doco a few years ago and he had become almost as obese as Loaf himself had been in his heyday. I also read somewhere that he had had heart problems and is a very unusual guy, being a bit of a recluse, works all night and sleeps all day, has never learned to drive (despite writing all of those songs about motorbikes and sex in the back of cars) and so on.

Most of the songs on Bat Out Of Hell II are re-works from the Bad for Good album, that Meat refused to work on after the huge success of Bat Out Of Hell.

I reckon Meat will be around for a little while yet, I think the whole health scares thing with him is all part of the Meat Loaf publicity wagon clocking up more mileage.

As for Steinman, he is currently working on 'Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical' for the west end and has been doing so for what seems like an age.

I personally like all the Bat albums and would like to see it. It's got to be better than Billy 'look at me I can dance and I'm from up north' Elliott.

Steinman told Rolling Stone Magazine a few years back that Meat Loaf is the only person that can sing his songs just how he intended them to be, which begs the question will Meat bag the lead role in the musical? although I suspect that could be a stretch for the big man.

Yes, I know Bat 2 is mainly reworks from the 'orrible Bad for Good. Didn't know about Bat the Musical. Is it based on Neverland, the project he has been working on since college that was to be the original basis for the Bat song cycle?

You can read the script of Neverland here:

http://www.jimsteinm.../neverland4.htm

http://www.jimsteinm.../neverland5.htm

Since you are a fan, here are some of the songs, which are basically parts of Bat Out of Hell in embryonic format:

I think the operative phrase there is "a few years back". ;)

Yeah DJL, thanks for the links, not sure what would be in the musical or indeed left out!

This is the web address to register an interest in the upcomong musical, but like I said this has been on line for about three years now without further progress.

www.batoutofhellthemusical.com

I wonder if Neverland will indeed be part of the musical? or is the musical? Although you'd think if he's been writing it since his college days it should be some where near bloody finished by now!
