ObakeFilter 905 Posted January 1, 2023 Nice choice, but it makes me wonder how marshall allen never got a place in the list.
Sean 6,329 Posted January 1, 2023 He is quite possibly the best new pick on the list with the possible exception of Sakamoto. Great pick committee!
six feet blunder 161 Posted January 1, 2023 Not be shocked if he is the 1st death of 2023
Sean 6,329 Posted January 21, 2023 It just occurred to me could his pulmonary fibrosis be linked to him being very near ground zero during 9/11? Equally smoking heroin could have done it but an interesting thought.
The Daredevil 1,189 Posted April 7, 2023 Last February, Rollins sold his music to Reservoir Media and released a statement sharing his excitement about it. https://www.vibe.com/news/entertainment/sonny-rollins-music-catalog-reservoir-media-1234737225/ Doesn’t sound like a man at death’s door.
Spade_Cooley 9,530 Posted May 3, 2023 Going to mention it here as I'll probably forget when it becomes pertinent: Rollins is one of only two people (out of 57) captured in the famous photograph A Great Day In Harlem still alive. The other is Benny Golson, also a DDP pick this year.

Collins and Golson have been around for forever.
harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy 1,689 Posted May 27, 2023 I wonder if he writes (improvises?) his own tweets, most of which run along the lines of “Happy Birthday [insert jazz legend who’s long dead]”
Perfect Passing 277 Posted September 8, 2023 WKCR completed a 24-hour birthday celebration for Sonny Rollins’ 93rd birthday, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online all day on Thursday, September 7th.
JQW 283 Posted September 8, 2023 In 1949, Sonny Rollins was one of the five musicians who took part in a Bud Powell recording session for Blue Note, which later appeared on the first side of the album The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1. Rollins is not the only musician from that session still alive, as drummer Roy Haynes is also still with us. The trumpeter on that session, Fats Navarro, died back in 1950.
The Daredevil 1,189 Posted October 31, 2023 Podcast from earlier this year Sounds much better than expected, members who picked Sonny as the 14th Death of 2023 will be disappointed...

drol 11,951 Posted September 22 If Golson is actually dead, Rollins is the last survivor from the A Great Day in Harlem photograph. Ronnie Free (wiki) arrived too late for the photo, but is the closest thing to a survivor. 89 in January.
Torva Messor 279 Posted September 22 Benny Golson must be dead. Right now I'm hearing "Whisper Not" from Benny Golson's New York Scene from a radio show.
