It has been a year since Martin Amis died and claimed the title for the longest span from pick to List of the Missed, at 25 years (1998 to 2023). When @YoungWillz pointed this out, I wondered if there were other contenders... and there are. I also have it in my memory that @Gooseberry Crumble said something that instigated this research, so please take that credit too! This is the TL;DR summary. See spoilers for full analysis. Spoiler As it is the one year mark since Martin Amis’ death, he still holds the title of longest span entry on the LotM. It is 25 years, with his selection for the 1998 list to his death on 18 May 2023. I was curious if there are other contenders for the title, so I looked into the picks of the 1998 list. And there are contenders! And oh my goodness, I have every respect for all the people who have run the DDP. The spelling is atrocious and leads to some unclear names and judgment calls. Please use the forms that have been brought in to submit your teams. I’ve left the spelling as they occur on the 1998 list and accept that any error on identification of the picks are mine. The italics indicate a corrected spelling of a name. First, the 1998 list is a zeitgeist of the 90s. The 8 contenders below do highlight this. Please note there is a formatting issue with copy/paste from Google docs, hence the bold. With three musicians (Beck, Morissette, Slash), actress Duffy with a long history of neurosarcoidosis diagnosed in 1995 (active interviews in 2022), American drag queen RuPaul on the heels of ‘90s exposure, Drexler after the previous year's notoriety and Sainz Sr a rally driver (more to follow on this!). The name I’m nearly certain of is Terry Nichols, the Oklahoma City bombing. His federal trial was in 1997 and since his trial was still ongoing in December 1997, I would imagine the punter was making a wager on a death sentence. Recall this is early DDP years before rule changes. If it is Nichols, then he does not come close to qualifying, as he was picked again for the DDP most recently in 2014. I’m not entirely sure as there is a Terry Nicholl (b 1952), an English footballer. Footballers are popular picks in the DDP, hence my hedging. Not in F1, but around that time, we lost Gonzalo Rodriguez, Greg Moore, Jeff Krosnoff in Indycar and an host of others in other racing.
