msc 18,438 Posted August 29 I can answer the why. When I co-ran the DDP we tried to make it as democratic as possible and a whole bunch of players asked for it. The list of qualifying obits was expanded greatly as people who ought to score under the rules (actors, Nobel prize winners) weren't and this got a lot of complaints. (Indeed, you might recall a Carrie Hamilton situation which cost you a third DDP title a number of years ago.) This is why the Radio Times and Economist are there despite never producing a necessary QO. Because one day they feasible might. Anyhow it was a correction to the rather stricter QO rules a predecessor put in place where DDP picks could get BBC obits and not get a qualifying obit. I am unsure as to the success of the Yahoo qo loophole. I am aware it has been claimed to be abused (though imo that's a ffbi issue) and I have no say in future rule changes, thankfully. However if you were to show me a list of DDP hits that only got yahoo obits and there was politicians, actors or scientists on that list then I would stand by it doing exactly what it was intended to do. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

drunkasaskunk 194 Posted August 29 I think that one of the best features of the DDP is the fact that it does have a finite list from which a QO can come, which is why I am so against Yahoo being a source. I know that some dead pools have a committee - or politburo - who decide if someone is famous enough for inclusion. Apart from FFBI picks I love the fact that we rely on journalists at reputable(ish) news organisations to write about the deaths of "famous" people. IMHO it is madness that an obit from a source that is not acceptable suddenly becomes acceptable because a bot at Yahoo has picked it up. I do not think that a death reported in the Flying Fish Cove gazette should be allowed as a QO, even if the yahoo bot picks it up. In my view the only Yahoo obits that should count are those that reference one of OUR QO's - which would make yahoo redundant, though it COULD help if a real QO gets archived leaving the Yahoo obit the only available version. If yahoo is permitted then why not (god forbid!) Wikipedia? (OK - I know why Wiki is not allowed) As for the Carrie Hamilton situation which cost me a third DDP title in 2002 I have no complaints. The rules were (and still are) the rules. She did not get a QO because the UK media did not deem her famous enough. This is just my tough luck and bad judgement on my part. Thems the breaks. The Commonwealth guy's obit will be next time, and as always let me know if any of the LotL/M's slipped me by. Just a reminder that I still need a successor for the front page duties. If it helps at all, I wouldn't rule out still doing some of the less time consuming bits of the front page, you know, LotL/M, Theme Team League, stuff like that. I'd still prefer a full-on successor but wouldn't fully rule out the former if it gets to that point. Or perhaps these duties can be split between two new people. I remember obits weren't a thing until TMIB did his revamp of the front page in 2012 to have his roundups. And then the fuller obits when the site took the current design. But there had been fewer hits in general so more "fun" you could do with the names that were hits.
