dimreaper 697 Posted March 12 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/books/malachy-mccourt-dead.html A hit for myself. For transparency, I will leave it up to Mr. Key to decide whether or not he's noteworthy enough. If I may argue my case, while he wasn't as well known as his brother, he was a fairly well known author in his own right.

John Key 747 Posted April 11 Barbara Rush Torva Messor 7+1 Lou Counter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Conter "At the time of his death, he was the last living survivor of the sinking of the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941." @The Immortal I'm concerned about this one just because it seems he may have been famous because of his advanced age. He was there for a noteworthy event and war and write a book. His wikipedia page seemed to have been made only in December 2023. I'm leaning towards no on the point. Could I please hear an argument for him being otherwise famous, the popularity of his book, or anything else that should be taken into consideration in awarding a point? A reminder of the criteria I usually look at: Are they likely to obit in a major newspaper? Are they a well known celebrity? Do they have a Wikipedia page in any language (that clearly wasn't made just for Deathlisting) A rule that may go against your favour: Candidates cannot be famous solely for the fact they are likely to die imminently - this includes people famous only for their advanced age. - Would he be famous and noteworthy if he published that same book in 1981 but died in 1983 of his congestive heart failure, or is it only because of his longevity? Juan Vicente Perez @BuffaloPhil Candidates cannot be famous solely for the fact they are likely to die imminently - this includes people famous only for their advanced age. If he wasn't the oldest remaining survivor and his significance only seemed to come from that, my judgement may be different (e.g. I would likely have accepted both of these men who died in 2007 and 2000 as a point in this competition, but I don't think they would have even been picked or known about since they were not significant figures) I choose not to award the points for the longest lasting survivor of a historical event, who doesn't seem to be a significant figure other than his longevity. I have tried to make this decision in good faith and have done many minutes of googling in order to consider the fame of his book and his post WW2 life. If your first sub dies, feel free to remind us and they may count instead. Once again, the relevant rule/guideline, which I bolded in the first post of this forum: Candidates cannot be famous solely for the fact they are likely to die imminently - this includes people famous only for their advanced age. I respect your decision. Jay-Jay Solari would be my 1st sub in line. With what you describe, I'm pretty certain Ike Schab would fall to this rule as well. Although he is not the last Pearl Harbor survivor by any means, his rise to fame kind of happened because he had a wish to return to the harbor for the 80th anniversary of the attack (he subsequently returned for 2022 and 2023 as well). Depending on how you feel, I can retire Schab and have my 2nd substitute George Eastham come in place.

Just to be a difficult - other than the first year when I didn't have that rule written out, I generally try to follow this rule - "We won't challenge names until after their death." I did create a precedent in the first year of this competition for this happening for leniency because I didn't write the rule at the beginning of the competition, but I haven't done it since.
