Very famous British actress has withdrawn from public life at age 65 following a dementia diagnosis in 2021.

Possibly for 2026 or thereafter?

Hasn’t acted on screen since 2015 and last on stage in 2017. Didn’t take part in the Birds of a Feather reunion in late 2020 and received a dementia diagnosis in 2021. So this is 4/5 years down the line and she’s withdrawing from public life, so presumably more advanced now.

I was just reading her last public appearance was back in 2022.

I think that was when she got her MBE.

She was supposed to do a crime drama for Channel 5 in the autumn of 2020 after that but then quietly pulled out and was replaced by Sally Lindsay. According to articles announcing her casting filming had already started but then she must have pulled out. Points to an early 2021 diagnosis prehaps.

Also it’s her husband making the announcement- normally when a family member makes a health announcement it shows the person is not well enough to do it themselves and the family don’t want to lie and ghost write a statement for them.

Always good to make a thread for someone who has explicitly said they're stepping away from public life, so there's no news to post in it between the thread opening and their death a few years later.

I'm with you.  I think people are worth an individual thread if there are regular updates on them or they are frequently in the news.

I don't think people deserve a thread because they are particularly notable or good at what they do.

Pauline Quirke is a fine actress but it sounds like there won't be much to say until her inevitable demise.

Agree with this assessment.  I've never heard of this woman but she seems like a viable death pooling name.  Incidentally, any time someone feels the descriptive " Very famous" needs to be tagged on before someone's name it usually means 99% of the planet has never heard of them.

Very well known in the U.K. as she started off as a child actor with her own TV show

So many actors and actresses seem to get their own threads even ones who are not particularly widely known like this woman or that Hollywood actress the other day whose name I have already forgotten, however the same privilege is not afforded to footballers and other professions, they are asked to share a thread with those in the same sport (eg rugby players).

Maybe we should have a separate thread for every ex rugby international with dementia?

I don't doubt that and, as she's a viable pick in most games who will seemingly have news updates, have no problem with her having her own thread.  Should never be on the official list, though.

I’d say within the UK she is more famous than several other Uk only names who have made the list over the years.

Alzheimers UK say she will be working with them to raise awareness, so it’s possible that there will still be further updates/appearances.

Of the opinion the list shouldn't include "Insert-country-here only" names.  Should be able to find 50 names that cover a bit more territory.

60-61 is really a bit young to get dementia.

Dean windass is even younger (if you know who he is).

Why shouldn't she make the official list?

Make the list the Internet's go to death list. The death list of record. Be international, not insular. The sun set on the empire well before she started her acting career.  There are certainly well over 50 good names of international note to chose from, who are about to kick the bucket, each year.

I absolutely see your point, and I think it is. But there have always been names on the list I've had to Google as personally I haven't known them, although 50 universally well known names could easily be picked...do you ignore those that are far more likely to get you a hit that albeit, are a little less well known.

Its sad when it happens to people you know were/are smart or could remember certain things specifically (reading lines etc), because now you know that if they had a script in front of them, they'd now struggle.

If they go that way they might as well pick all the non-celebrities we all do for our various games.  Make the list 49 Bill Gates Snrs and Dick Van Dyke.  It's such on odd line they seem to be trying to walk.  Could easily either go all out for hits or only pick internationally known names but they chose not to do either, hence my signature.

No they don't, and I'd be all for an all out A list attitude to it.

et al.

Kind of, but it's a UK site and the list was started at a UK university. So some latitude regarding the famous of the UK specifically should probably be expected.

I think they should all be British, and in their 90s. And Richard O’Sullivan should always be number 1, even though he’s only 80. Clive Dunn back at #50, please.

Anyway, I remember Pauline’s Quirkes. The title at least - was it some kind of Why Don’t You rip-off, perhaps?

Edit: I see it was some sort of kids variety/sketch show, with Flintlock (poor man’s Bay City Rollers) as the regular band. It’s probably on YouTube with a “who’s here in 2025” comment.
