Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 12, 2013 Perhaps he has come to the startling realisation that a man who spent years allegedly covering up for priests when they were allegedly caught allegedly fucking kids is not exactly the face the modern church should be putting forward as its leader. No, I doubt they would care less about that. It is more likely to do with the ongoing political war between Ratzinger's Secretary of State, Berscone and his hard right rivals, led by Sodano. Things like the butler trial and that weird threat/statement that was exposed that Ratzinger would be dead by November 2012 are all part of the murky trail, methinks. "So fuck the motherfucker And fuck you, motherfucker If you're still a motherfucking Papist If he covered for a single motherfucker Who's a kiddie fucker Fuck the motherfucker He's as evil as the rapist" /Minchin Agreed or, putting it a bit more eloquently, here is a statement from Irish abuse survivors: ******* One of the organisations representing victims of Catholic clergy in Ireland's notorious orphanages and industrial schools said today that survivors would not miss Pope Benedict, reports Henry McDonald from Dublin. Irish Survivors of Child Abuse said the outgoing pope had broken all his promises to offer them some semblance of justice for the crimes of priests and other members of religious orders in Ireland. John Kelly, one of the founders of Irish Soca and a former inmate at Dublin's notorious Artane Industrial School which was run by the Christian Brothers, said Pope Benedict had resisted their demands to properly investigate and in some instances disband religious orders tainted by sexual and physical abuse. Speaking in Dublin, Kelly said: "In our view we were let down in terms of promises of inquiries, reform and most importantly of all the Vatican continuing not to acknowledge that any priest or religious bodies found guilty of child abuse would face the civil authorities and be tried for their crimes in the courts. "I'm afraid to say Pope Benedict won't be missed as the Vatican continued to block proper investigations into the abuse scandals during his term in office. Nor are we confident that things are going to be different because of all the conservative Cardinals he appointed. For us, he broke his word." The verbal assault on the Vatican would have been unthinkable right up to the early 1990s when successive Irish governments were terrified of challenging the Catholic church's authority because of fears of a backlash from pulpits across Ireland. ******* :(
JR976evil 906 Posted February 12, 2013 According to the prophecy of Malachi the next Pope is the last, and therefore the Anti-Christ who will bring about the destruction of the Church and Armageddon. The Book of Revelation says the Anti Christ will reign for 1260 days. That takes us to the year 2016, which is a numerical anagram of 1260. It's all starting to make sense... Nobody is interested Wait, he could be on to something While the world responded to the surprise of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, the roof of St. Peter's Basilica got a shock from the heavens. A bolt of lightning was captured hitting the Basilica, one of the holiest of Catholic churches, twice within hours of the announcement. Don't encourage him
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 12, 2013 As well as their betting odds, Paddy Power now have a blog offering a running commentary on who is likely to be the next pontiff. Someone there, too, is asking why "Little Ratzinger" Cañizares Llovera is now at such long odds. Update: This Wikipedia page purports to show a list of all papabili, based on media predictions. Toast 16,137 Posted February 12, 2013 Speaking of Paddy Power, I was amused to see that, apart from Bono and Father Dougal on offer at 1000/1, they were offering odds of 666/1 about Richard Dawkins.

Yes, noticed that. Apparently Dawkins sent out an incredibly bitchy tweet about the resignation yesterday, too. w***er.

Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted February 13, 2013 I can't remember his name but I think it'll be the Argentine Cardinal who used to be the Pope's spokesman. Either him, or the Austrian chap - Schoenborn is it?
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 13, 2013 Yes Schonborn's the Austrian but he has a reputation for being a bit liberal which would be a death sentence in that culture. He got in big stife for attacking the hardline far-righter Cardinal Sodano: http://www.thetablet...k/article/14678 http://www.guardian....n-sodano-papacy The Pope called him in and rebuked him for his efforts: http://religion.blog...buse-criticism/ :( I don't know much about the Argentine bloke, Leonardo Sandri, other than, as John Paul's spokesman, he fed DeathList false info by constantly downplaying the Pope's health problems. Here is an article on him: http://www.huffingto..._n_2663615.html
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 13, 2013 Paddy Power have now added this pledge to the top of their Pope Bet page: "If the cardinals elect the First Black Pope, we will refund all losing bets on the Next Pope market. "
EGN 121 Posted February 13, 2013 I'm sure satanists everywhere are rubbing their hands at the idea of Peter the Roman coming to power. Rather fitting in light of some of the links posted above, that a black pope may become The Black Pope and usher in/become the anti-christ. Of course, it may all be just mumbo-jumbo and sky pixies. Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 13, 2013 As you would expect, a number of news agencies are now offering profiles of the leading papabili: http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/belief/predicting-the-next-pope http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/02/11/16926298-whos-next-8-cardinal-contenders-who-could-succeed-pope-benedict?lite http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/02/11/vatican-next-pope/1908839/ http://ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/papal-frontrunner-distances-himself-conservative-movement Unfortunately for us, none of them offer any health information on the candidates whatsoever. I would have thought that would be one of the key things they would look into with regard to the contenders.

Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted February 15, 2013 The Vatican has now revealed that the Pope fell, "suffering a head injury that caused massive bleeding, while in Mexico last March." Meanwhile, Scola is streaking ahead to 11-4 in the betting odds, while Ravasi is a lousy 16-1 and Llovera is semmingly right out of it at 66-1.
the_engineer 1,415 Posted February 15, 2013 i'm going for Marc Ouellet i think the catholic chruch wants to globalise but not by electing a black pope rather a north american one instead. I think in the next 50 years you will see a black pope , east asian pope ( probably from south korea) and south american pope though.
Bibliogryphon 9,573 Posted February 15, 2013 I was behind someone getting onto a plane on Wednesday evening and his German newspaper had thumbnail pictures of all the cardinals who will participate in the election. I thought it would be a useful accessory with a pin to compile a 2014 DDP theme team.

I do have GCSEs in English and Maths. The only qualifications are: 1. Being Male 2. Being Baptized (in the Catholic faith, presumably) Having said that it would help if you were already a cardinal and white.
