Lady Bird Johnson

Recommended Posts

Former first lady - Lady Bird Johnson is very fragile and docters say she is expected to pass. It is currently unofficial, but seems to have just hit the net. They say on July 5th she devoloped a bad head cold - And later her condition progressed to pneumonia. I have checked CNN but found no artical to relate so far.

Where did you hear about LBJ's recent turn for the worse? I've done a search on Google News and didn't find anything...not to say that I don't believe, I mean, she's been circling the drain for some time.

I suspect this is probably happening. I have been watching all of the news channels and checking the net. I expect anytime to see a special report or breaking news report at sometime telling that she is dead.

I've got loads of thoughts, not too many about ex-first ladies mind. Tell us Deadsox, what is the source of the information about Nancy?

American tabloids which I've found to be pretty accurate in death predictions.

We spoke the other night.

She's going away on a shooting trip this weekend, trying to bag a couple of buffalo. She's a pretty good shot by all accounts, once blasted away a fleeing mink, one handed, with a 12 bore. Once she gets home, a few friends are coming around for an absinthe drinking session, then they're all going to hit the town. Last one standing gets a cigar.

Libellously,

I'm over it now. It takes more a grainy image of a man breaking up in to three bits to really disturb me. I was in 'Nam...

I viewed some of the other links from the Formula 1 thread, a whole plethora of carnage!

Unlikely to die of starvation mind, given her habit of responding to everything by opening her mouth wide and generally looking bewildered, she'll probably be able to survive on a diet of flies until her final breath.

Not on the 2005 list mind, so even if she sees Christmas and beyond, we could 'ave 'er!

Lady Bird Johnson makes rare public appearance

Not a photo this time - but a video clip!

Does not appear to be a well woman...

At least she's still out and about...

Mrs. LBJ looks better in the pic than I thought. She appeared to be alert. But she was still obviously frail and in a wheelchair. I would advise Deathlist to keep her on until the end, if nothing else given her age.

I had no idea she had her own golf course and also wild flower center

Her wildflower center is spectacular, especially in bluebonnet season.

She apparently accepted a rose named in her honor in October. The rose is beautiful.

She is such a classic Texas lady. Blue hair, blue suit. She is pictured with her mouth open yet again.

I understand she laughs a lot.

Yes, and in that photo, she looks quite well, it has to be said. However, I think the DL would be wise to keep her on the list. She seems to be doing better than someone of her fragility/age should be doing but that video clip showed a more realistic view of how she is than a still photo (wheelchair removed, make up on etc etc), I'm guessing.

Happy 94th birthday to NAP's favourite DL candidate! :(

Given what was said about her recent public apperance and picture of her I say she is in better shape than Gerald Ford, I used to think the opposite. Next year I think she should be ranked lower than Ford, heck I think that Ford is much more likely to croak before this new year's than Lady Bird.

Now Mrs. Johnson is one of 3 widowed first ladies along with Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan. At 94 years old, it is very doubtful that she will go to the funeral in Washington next week as she failed to attend the Reagan funeral. I would advise keeping Mrs. LBJ on the list and maybe putting Betty or Nancy on it too. I don't think the three ex-presidents, Carter, Bush, and Clinton are in frail enough health at the moment to go on the 2007 DL.

9 days ago on January 22 Lady Bird survived to the 34th anniversary of her husband LBJ's death. She is one tough widow, 34 years is a long time. She is in better health than I originally thought given her appearance at a public event a couple months ago. I dont know about her making it to 2010 to surpass Bess Truman as the oldest first lady in history though, and there is still a good chance she will go in 2007, for people this age its hard to tell alot of the time.

I have to say that Lady Bird Johnson is a very resilient woman in terms of hanging on this long. She is legally blind, suffered at least 2 strokes, and has had some heart and respiratory trouble. Considering that these health issues took place sometime back, it is unreal that she has made it into her 95th year. But at the same time, she is a wealthy woman and the widow of a former American president. These two factors combined are enough to give her access to the best medical care that is available. It's the same way that Ronald Reagan lived so long with Alzheimers Disease. However, I still think she is a good choice for Deathlist and no matter how long she hangs on, the DL should keep her on the list until the end. With regard to her breaking the record of Bess Truman, I seriously doubt it will happen as she would have to live through the summer of 2010. But then again you never know.

It's also going to be very interesting to watch Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan. Nancy seemed to be doing well at the funeral of President Gerald Ford. Betty, however I am unsure of. By the time President Ford was laid to rest, she was being escorted to the burial site in a wheelchair. Yes, she is almost 89 and was certainly exhausted. But unlike Lady Bird, Betty and Nancy both lost their husbands when they were well into old age.

Nancy will likely hang on a few more years at least until she is 90. But I am thinking that Betty could very well end up like Richard Nixon and die less than a year after her spouse.

An LBJ related death: Jack Valenti, a key advisor to President Johnson died today. Valenti was 85 and several years younger than Lady Bird It seems that Mrs. Johnson has outlived a vast majority of her husband's former advisors and cabinet secretaries in addition to many of her contemporaries in the political world. How long will this woman keep going?
