arrowsmith 447 Posted February 3, 2023 As there has been some confusion, and the Wikipedia entry is a mess, I went through the sources for the original list of ‘Nixon Enemies’. They can properly be split into three groups as I explain below. Original L ist of 20 has two living: Morton Halperin Sidney Davidoff Addendum to Original List of “Political Opponents” has 18 living: Fred Harris William Clay Charles Rangel James S. Doyle Ted Knap Morton Kondracke Martin Nolan Garry Wills Marvin Kalb Bill Cosby Jane Fonda Joe Namath Barbra Streisand Victor Palmieri Derek Bok Noam Chomsky Daniel Ellsberg Matthew Meselson - and five that I am having trouble finding obituaries for or proof that they are still alive Vincent McGee? (Business Executives for Peace and Aaron Diamond Foundation) James Laird? (Philadelphia Inquirer) George Hillman? (Ellery Products Manufacturing Co.) Charles Palmer? (National Student Association) Seymour Scharer? (Scharer & Associates) There is a third list of nearly six hundred names that I am not going to go through because they are merely anyone who worked for, or donated significant money too, the George McGovern campaign in 1968. Many well known people are on this list for no other reason than writing a check. Names which appear on the Wikipedia list but not on the list above are not actually on either of the first two lists. Some of them are on the third list and some of them are apocryphal and unsourced. Perhaps some of you would be interested in helping find out the fate of the mystery five? Any help is appreciated.

Of the “mysterious five”, do a forum search as I’m pretty sure me and @arghton tried to tackle some of them before. If you still can’t find anything then I’m happy to do some research, and if I get stuck I’ll wheel out the God of Research, the @tracy.

John Dean (b. 1938) provided the list to the Senate Watergate Committee in 1973. Well, who's still alive from the list? Organizations are not listed. Members of the House of Representatives (9 in total): Pete McCloskey (b. 1927) Elizabeth Holtzman (b. 1941) Pete McCloskey reportedly dead: Awaiting the usual.

I appreciate his being placed here because his apocryphal inclusion on the list is widely believed. However, he was not on either the first or second lists. I believe he was on the third “list”, which was not an enemies list really, but he was certainly a lowercase enemy of Nixon. Regardless, good spot and an icon.

Reports now coming in: https://abc7news.com/post/pete-mccloskey-former-bay-area-congressman-environmentalist-dies-at-age-96/14784769/ Apparently around the turn of the month it was reported he was slipping away. You can see him in action here: Charles Palmer is also definitely living. He was later a judge on the Los Angeles County Superior Court from 2002 to 2020, so again, pretty unlikely he will die without any notice. This article has his backstory. Here's his mom's obituary from 2018, and he's briefly mentioned in this 2022 article. George Hillman was working at Ellery at least as far back as 1950, so I looked at the NYC census from then for anyone that could match. The only guy that seems kinda plausible is a George Hillman b. 1901 who worked in the household furnishing industry. Even assuming that's not him, I think we can pretty safely stick a fork in this guy. As for James Laird, well, sucks to be him I guess. EDIT: actually, this is probably him.
