Gerry Adams & Martin McGuinness

Recommended Posts

The comparison between Nelson Mandela and Martin McGuinness is interesting.

It seems that by being a distance away from South Africa we are able to ignore his crimes and rejoice in the ending of apartheid.

But due to our greater knowledge (through proximity?) of the crimes of the IRA we are unable to view McGuinness in the same favourable light.

I would be able to say more about Mandela but Long Walk to Freedom is the only book I have ever started and not finished - I got to the bit where he got his foreskin lopped off but at that point the terrorism was still a good long way off and about every fourth word was a massive long African place name which just made the book unreadable (for me anyway).

I am Irish and even I can't defend this man there's a way for things to be done and aims to be achieved and murdering innocent folk isn't one of them.

My post was unrelated to your post and was a general reaction to his death. I don't know about nelsons crimes tbh.

Hopefully you will now change your avatar to something more pleasing to the eye?

I shall but I will keep it up a couple of days to celebrate his death.

Be interesting who's shitting it the most from his demise, SF, Unionists, Politizi or Westminster. At a guess SF. Tho the loyalists have been fucking around again. Geordie Gilmore got whacked a couple of weeks back , lovely bit of  defiance from him the day before  .

“Heard I’m getting the blame for the Oak . . . and I’m arrested. Well, I wasn’t there and I’m not arrested.”

He added:

“The days of the UDA putting people out of Carrick are over.”

Has your account been hijacked? You'll have to change your name to MorbidAdult if you maintain this.

Bloody hell I'm impressed. Way to go, seriously.

St Patrick wouldn't allow him to die on his day.

I suspect he'd be asking God for power-sharing.

Former Glenavon defender Tony Scappaticci found dead in his flat aged 48. Nothing to do with The Troubles, obviously, but "Scappaticci" can't be that common a name in the Stolen Six can it?

According to an online report I just found he'd "been ill." Though I share your observation on the name. Stakeknife spells his surname the same way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Scappaticci

Deadlock in Ulster talks

Bring on direct rule and a few criminal psychopaths rekindling the spirit of the young McGuinness, then

If some muppets do go down the new-IRA route then it'll play directly into May's hands - as she'll be able to use the new conflicts as a reason not to give a referendum on a united Ireland that is almost guaranteed to happen as a result of Brexit.

There's a recent biography of Adams that's been well reviewed but - apparently - makes a pertinent point about his continued hold on life. The argument being that as someone with a bit of political nous he was a catch for the provo side because he had more reasoning power than a lot of the blow 'em up/ kill 'em brigade and was valued for the whiff of legitimacy he provided whilst the British military side regarded him as their best hope of something better than a shooting war and never seriously considered assassinating him.

Then again - the current die-hards aren't bound by that thinking

Touch of the Mugabe's mind. From said link: But sources within the mainstream Irish republican movement and veteran Adams-watchers believe the 69-year-old will still hold the centre of power in Sinn Féin from behind the scenes long after his official successor is elevated to the top post.
