A swear filter is only as good

To whoever is programming it.

As the Freedom Polisher said to the Canadian.

Your thinking skills are worth my sh*t!

You ought to put some of that poo on ebay Royce, sounds like you're sitting on a gold mine.

But it isn't original. It's no good. Besides I no longer want to post in this thread.

Try the modified link on my post above, Churchill, John Cleese, Sir Alfred Hitchcock; good company I'd say.

Could anyone living closer to Ronnie Scott's than Maryport drag themselves along to check out GM tonight or tomorrow? You might be watching his last gigs, might even get the chance to tell him about this thread. We did discuss getting a subject to post on his/her own thread. You might get the inside track on his health. He looks very frail to me, believable he'll not be around in a year.

Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of the month George is doing a two nighter at Pizza Express, Maidstone. Any DL'ers in the era could grab a bite and get an insight.

Er yeah, west cumbrians are - like - a bit behind the times. Sorry and that.

That's a shame, we'll be in London for 2 weeks over Christmas and I'd been hoping that he may be performing elsewhere over the festive season. Dave and I would have loved to catch him at Ronnie Scotts, but it was a tad too early for us. Tant pis <_<

Below is the text of an e-mail received at MPFC Towers this very day:

Hello,

This message is in response to the ridiculous situation created by spammers. We can only apologise to our members for the nature of published material and we fully accept that we must police the forum more frequently and with a zero tolerance approach to any member who includes offensive material and associated domain links. This activity is abhorrent and wholly unacceptable.

To be honest we thought, in our naivety, the forum would build slowly and that, as numbers grew, we would happily invest time ensuring that members opinions were responded to. It appears that there are a few who seem to think that their actions are clever and controversial this, perhaps, may be construed as the sort of thing that George would approve of, be assured, he does not.

House of Graham will continue to monitor the situation and has no intention of closing the forum. We intend to update the website and would welcome ideas, photographs and contributions - we have always seen the website as representative of those who have followed his career with admiration and appreciation for this very British eccentric who, sadly, is not in good health. A vibrant forum and website will endure as a fitting epitaph in years to come.

Your comments are appreciated.

With regards,

Brian J Graham

House of Graham

TBH I thought it some subtle spam myself since it didn't openly introduce itself as coming from GM's site. I'm guessing they have more problem with those advertising Asian porn than they do the odd DL'er dropping in. Either way, they're on it.

Unfortunately they're running their forum with different software than ours, but I may be able to give a few hints and tips on how to make life bearable.

We have no lack of spam and spammers here, but thanks to very active policing by our Most Esteemed Mods and some preemptive measures by technical staff our members rarely notice.

regards,

Hein

Let's face it, if it wasn't for the DLers there wouldn't be a George Melly forum. It's a supreme irony that a site we inhabited as a bit of a joke we grew to rather like. Sadly it has now been invaded by arseholes who don't give a flying F**k about anything. I hope, MH, you are able to help out their admins.

I received the same email as MPFC. It seems to me that they had been unaware of the potential size of the spam problem and could really do with some help with the housekeeping.

The Admin has now posted a request for volunteers!

Hein, is this a job that any of us could do or should it be left to someone with technical knowledge?

Those housekeeping tasks (like taking out the rubbish) can be done by anyone who can recognise spam and click a mouse. Preventive measures may need a bit of technical knowledge of how the WWW works, but not much.

Hein

Melly has written a long obituary of his old band-mate, Mick Mulligan

When I heard of Mick's death, I rang up the clarinetist Wally Fawkes, our contemporary. "Ah well, George," he said, with typical wisdom, "there goes our youth."

I see the admins have cleaned up the George Melly site, well done MH if you had anything to do with it. Sadly the new format is so dark and faded I can hadly read the writing. No chance of George reading it I would have thought.

On the other hand there's an encouraging message from the admin saying that George might be pursuaded to come on it one day. Better not leave it too long.

But GM can die and might do soon. His popularity amongst deadpoolers is notable for 2007, I predict a points frenzy some time this calendar year.

The Melly forum seems to be as good as dead.

I wrote to them offering to sort it out for them, but have had no reply. They obviously aren't particularly interested in it. I'm wondering if House of Graham is being paid by anyone to run the site, in which case it is a disgrace. In particular that they asked for volunteers to do their job for them.

The rest of the Melly site is also incomplete. As are other House of Graham sites. It's conceivable that they haven't been given any of the necessary content to publish, or that they haven't been paid, but they could still make the effort to let us Melly enthusiasts know what's up.

Does anyone fancy founding an unofficial Melly Forum. Perhaps from invisionfree or Yabb?

We could transfer most of the threads over.

But who will undertake this task?

Not me for a kick-off.

Sadly NAP my IT skills run to posting here and writing my blog, so it won't be me. I bet the buggers are caning him on fees too. George deserves better.

so once again, the DL becomes the leading source of information on the internet about someone famous. And all those people still write to us telling us how horrid we are, don't we respect these great people, blah, blah. I've loved George Melly ever since he first showed up in Viz magazine 20+ years ago.
